● In English, we wish somebody something.


● e.g. we wish somebody luck, all the best and, of course, a happy birthday!

I wish you all the best for the future.

My auntie rang me last night to wish me a happy birthday.

Expressing wishes about the present

● We use wish or if only + a past tense to make wishes about the present.

I wish I had more money.

If only we were lying on a beach right now!

We use a past tense here,


but the meaning is

● We use wish or if only + past perfect for wishes about the past.

I wish I had studied harder for the exam. I probably


wouldn’t have failed it!

If only I hadn’t spent so much money on clothes!

● Another way of expressing a wish about the past is with should have + past participle.

I should have called him yesterday to wish him a happy


birthday. I can’t believe I forgot!
