Single Angle Compression Members and Built Up

The document provides examples of calculating the axial compressive strength of steel members under LRFD and ASD design. It then provides the properties of built-up columns and asks to calculate their axial strengths. Specifically, it gives the properties of a built-up column consisting of two C375x75 sections welded to a plate, that is 3.5m long and hinged at both ends. It asks the reader to determine the LRFD and ASD axial strengths, given the material yield strength is 345 MPa.

Built-up Members

Compute the LRFD and ASD allowable axial strength of the built-up column. The effective lengths of the
column are KLx = 9m, and KLy = 4.5m. Use Fy = 250 MPa.

Properties of W200x72

Ag = 9100 mm2, d = 216 mm, Ix = 76.6 x10^6 mm4, Iy = 25.3 x 10^6 mm4

Properties of C225x30

Ag = 3790 mm2, xc = 14.8 mm, tw = 11.4 mm, Ix = 25.3 x 10^6 mm4, Iy = 1 x 10^6 mm4

Answer: LRFD = 1727.91 kN, ASD = 1149.6 kN

The built-up column shown consist of two C375x75 welded to a PL 12 mm x 400 mm. The column is
3.5m long and is hinged at both ends. Determine the LRFD design strength and the ASD allowable
strength if the column is fully effective and axially loaded. Use Fy = 345 MPa.

Properties of C375x75

A = 9480 mm2 d = 381 mm xc = 20.3 mm bf = 94.5 mm tf = 16.5 mm

tw = 18.2 mm Icx = 168 x 106 mm4, Icy = 4.58 x 106 mm4
