How Energy Is Produced AndManaged

Energy can be either potential or kinetic. Potential energy is stored energy due to an object's position or shape, while kinetic energy is the energy of moving objects. There are various types of energy resources including renewable resources like solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass as well as non-renewable resources like fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and batteries. The Philippines utilizes many renewable energy sources through various power plants such as geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, and wind farms. Natural resources are important as without them, humans would not survive, and we rely on resources for over 60% of our needs like food, transportation, and housing.

Word Pool
Direction: To get started, you have to choose the terms
related to energy from the WORD POOL below.

List down these words on the table on and write what

you know about it on a separate sheet of paper.
What is Energy?

Energy is defined as the

ability to do work.
2 Forms of Energy
1. Potential Energy
2. Kinetic Energy
What is Potential
Energy?
Potential energy is the energy
stored in an object because of its
position or
shape.
What is Kinetic Energy?

Kinetic energy is the energy of

moving matter.
What is Power Plant?
A power plant is an industrial
facility that generates electricity
from primary
energy.
Classifications
Renewable Resources & Non-Renewable Resurces
Renewable Resources
- Can be used repeatedly and does
not run out because it is naturally
replaced.
- Ex. solar energy, wind, falling
water
Geothermal Energy
It is produced by the heat of Earth's molten interior.

This energy is harnessed to generate electricity when

water is injected deep underground and returns as steam
(or hot water, which is later converted to steam)to drive a
turbine on an electric power generator that produces
electricity.
Geothermal Energy
Some of the operational geothermal power plants in the Philippines are:

• Malibarara Geothermal Power Plant in Sto. Tomas, Batangas

• Makban Geothermal Power Plant and Makban Binary Geothermal Power

Plant in Bay, Laguna

• Tiwi Geothermal Power Plant in Tiwi, Albay

• Bacon Manito Geothermal Power Plant in Sorosogon

• Unified Leyte Geothermal Power Plant Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant in Leyte
• Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field – Nasulo Geothermal Power
Plant and Palinpinon Geothermal Power Plant in Valencia Negros Occidental

Hydroelectric
Hydroelectric power (hydropower) is
derived from the energy of falling or
moving water to generate electricity.
Hydroelectric
Some of the operational hydroelectric power plants in
the Philippines are:
• Palakpakin Hydroelectric Power Plant in San Pablo,
Laguna
• Balugbog Hydroelectric Power Plant in Narcarlan,
Laguna
• Cantingas Hydroelectric Power Plant in San Fernando,
Romblon
Wind Power
Wind is moving air created as
the sun heats the earth’s
surface. As long as the sun is
shining, the wind remains an
infinite, renewable resource.
Wind Power
Some of the most recent developments are the
1.Bangui Wind Farm,
2. Burgos Wind Farm, and
3. Caparispisan Wind Farm in Ilocos Norte,
4. the Wind Energy Power System in Oriental
Mindoro,
5. San Lorenzo Wind Farm in Guimaras,
Nabas Wind Farm in Aklan and
Pililla Wind Farm in Rizal.

Solar Energy
Since earth formed, the sun has produced energy in the
form of heat and light. It is considered unlimited

Solar energy is also known as “The People’s Power,” referring to

the easy
deployment of solar panels and the introduction of “community
solar gardens” where
energy is shared among owners.
Solar Energy
Some of the operational solar power plants in the Philippines
are:

• Lian Sola Power Project and Calatagan Solar Power Project in

Calatagan,Batangas

• Cavite Economic Zone Solar Power Project in Rosario and

General Trias,Cavite

Biomass
Biomass refers to organic matter from
plants and animals (microorganisms).
Organic wastes such as crop remains,
manure, and garbage usually left to rot,
can
be used for electricity generation.

form of heat and light. It is considered unlimited

Wind Power
Wind is moving air created as the sun heats the earth’s
surface. As long as the sun is shining, the wind remains
an infinite, renewable resource.
Non-Renewable Resources
- A natural substance that is not
replenished with the speed at which it is
consumed.
- Ex. oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear
energy
1. Fossil fuels
Coal, oil and gas are fossil fuels, which have been
formed over the last 600 million years.

Coal is the fossilized remains of huge forests which

covered many parts of the world in prehistoric times and
hence contains biomass.
Oil
Oil is a liquid fossil fuel. Most of the worlds oil is still
deep under the ground.

Coal
Coal is a black or brownish rock. We burn coal to
create energy
2. Electrochemical (batteries)

A battery is a device that stores chemical

energy and converts it to electrical
energy. The chemical reactions in a battery
involve the flow of electrons from one material
(electrode) to another, through an external
circuit.

Why are Natural
Resources Important?
Why are Natural
Resources Important?
Without natural resources humans would not survive. People use
natural resources every day directly or indirectly.
More than

60% of
resource use are
towards food and drink,
mobility (cars, trains),
and housing.
