Assingment 2 MEC610

The document is an assignment report for a finite element analysis course. It analyzes the structural safety of a crane chain using two different materials: AISI 8622 steel and structural steel. The analysis found that structural steel had a lower total deformation and was therefore more suitable for the link chain material. The report consisted of sections on introduction, problem statement, finite element model, results, discussion, conclusion, and references.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Disasters are an unexpected accident or natural calamity that results in significant property
damage or fatalities. The industrial disasters are result from mishaps, failures, accidents, or
misuse of a particular technology. Industrial tragedies occur more frequently as industry
development accelerates. Compared to other industrially developed nations, this nation has a
high disasters rate. They are account for 62.3 percent of all industrial disasters that are classified
by failure. This should be throughly studied. Numerous initiatives are needed to lower the
industrial disasters. One of the main causes of the disasters are not following the procedure
properly. In this study, the Finite Element analysis were done on the installation of link chain.
The chain (Figure 1) is usually used to crane heavy weight materials and hot parts in industry
due to its rigidity and strong resistance to heat and corrosion. There is two condition of
installation, the first (figure 2(A)), shows the properly installed connecting chain while the othe
one ( Figure 2(B)) shows the improper installation.

2.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

A procedure is a standard or authorized manner to carry out an activity. It is very important in

industrial. Following the technique while carrying out the activity will assist both the industry
and the individual. The disaster is preventable. Knowing that every industrial has disaster and
the causes of it, is because of not following the procedure. So, if the workers follow and obey
with the procedure, the number of disasters will reduce. In this study, the Finite Element
analysis is performed to identify the correct and incorrect installation procedures of link chain
and identifies the factors which could lead to disastrous failures from the incorrect installation.
For some people, they believe that the installation can be done in any way, but it has a certain
procedure. With knowing it, just only performing incorrect installation, it will be giving
disaster for several parties. Thus, different dimension and material also were some factors that
can make the link chain become problem. In this report, there are two different type of material
and size were being conduct to see the suitable and will long last when the link chain being
installed at the hook crane.

5.0 DISCUSSION

From the data obtained, there are two different types of material and dimension were being
conducted. During the test, the force for these two types were same which are 49100N. The
result also not same with the case study that chosen because the dimension is not given. For
the first material is AISI 8622 Steel with the dimension of diameter 0.01m, height 0.02m and
extended depth 0.01m. AISI 8622 Steel is an amalgamation steel that formulated for primary
forming into wrought products. It has a relatively low thermal conductivity and a relatively
high rigidity among AISI wrought steel. From the result, the maximum total deformation is
0.00036833. Next the maximum and minimum equivalent stress is 3.2279×109 and 3.977×107.
Lastly, the maximum and minimum equivalent elastic strain is 0.01614 and 0.00019891.

Then, for the second material which is structural steel with the dimension of diameter
0.02m, height 0.04m and extended depth 0.02m. Structural steel, one of the other extensively
used structure accoutrements in the construction assiduity, is also the most studied and best
understood. Structural steel is substantially used as an underpinning material to fight
concrete’s low tensile strength and rigidity. Structural steel is 100 percent recyclable and one
of the most reused accoutrements in the world. sword can be classified as carbon steel, high-
strength low-amalgamation (HSLA) sword, heat-treated carbon sword, and heat-treated
constructional amalgamation steel. From the result, the maximum total deformation is
0.00018748. Next the maximum and minimum equivalent stress is 8.5223×108 and
1.0429×107. Lastly, the maximum and minimum equivalent elastic strain is 0.0042611 and
5.7883×10-5.

6.0 CONCLUSION

During the research, structural safety of a crane chain was delved through the vaticination of
the chain’s material behavior. likewise, detailed analysis is recommended to consider residual
stress in the welding zone and colorful changes of cargo condition to further upgrade the
fracture medium analysis. Based on the result and discussion that obtained from the
simulation, the suitable for link chain is using material structural steel because the total
deformation is lower. Structural steel is the most extensively used engineering and structure
material on the earth and is generally used in ultramodern construction. Because of its
constructability and high strength to weight rate, Structural Steel is used to make moment's
loftiest structures.
