1. Using appropriate diagrams (circuits and waveforms) discuss the principle of operation of
i. Single-phase half bridge voltage source inverters
a) With resistive load
b) With inductive load
ii. Single-phase full bridge voltage source inverters
a) With resistive load
b) With inductive load

2. The full-bridge inverter below has a source voltage 𝐸𝑑𝑐 = 200 𝑉. The inverter supplies an 𝑅𝐿𝐶 load with 𝑅 = 20 Ω, 𝐿 = 5 𝑚𝐻 and
𝐶 = 48 𝜇𝐹. The inverter frequency is 100 𝐻𝑧. Determine:

i. The rms load current at fundamental frequency


ii. The rms value of load current
iii. The power output and
iv. The average supply current.
3. The single-phase half-bridge inverter below has a resistive load of 5 Ω and the center-tap dc input voltage is 12 𝑉. Compute:

i. RMS value of the output voltage.


ii. Fundamental component of the output voltage waveform.
iii. First five harmonics of the output-voltage waveform.
iv. Fundamental power consumed by the load.
v. IGBT ratings
vi. Total harmonic distortion THD
vii. The distortion factor DF
viii. The harmonic factor and the distortion factor of the lowest order harmonic

4. Compute the output frequency of a series inverter with the following specifications: L = 10 mH; C = 0.1 uF; R= 150 SI, Toff =
0.2 ms. Also, find the attenuation factor (AF).
5. Design a series inverter to meet the following specifications:
Maximum output frequency = 4 kHz
Load resistance varies from 400 to 100 Ω
Supply voltage = 120 V.
6. Obtain the value of the commutating components L and C of a parallel inverter for an output voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz and peak
load current 1 A. The d.c. input voltage is 30 V. Assume turn-off time of SCR is 40 us.
7. A three-phase bridge-inverter is fed from a d.c. source of 200 V. If the load is star-connected of 10 Ω /phase pure resistance,
determine the RMS load current, the required RMS current rating of the thyristors and the load power for (i) 120° firing, and (ii) 180°
firing.
