Portfolio: Skills Laboratory: NCM 116 (Wednesday 5:00PM - 8:00PM) NCM 117 (Friday 10:00AM - 1:00PM)

The document summarizes the student Rianne Cortiguerra's reflections on two skills laboratory activities: 1) The first activity covered balance skeletal traction and the student learned about its principles and nursing responsibilities for patients with fractures. 2) The second activity covered mental status assessment and the student learned it evaluates various areas of cognitive function to identify mental health issues or dysfunctions. The skills laboratories provided hands-on experience and confidence for providing safe patient care in clinical settings.

Reflection: What I have learned from the activity
NCM 116 SKILLS LABORATORY

The three weeks of our skills laboratory, covers the area of knowledge and skills
regarding the topic Balance Skeletal Traction. Learning this skills will definitely aid us student
nurses not only to become familiar but more importantly execute this skill with confidence in the
future

The knowledge that I have learned in this skills laboratory was definitely different from
our previous learning as this is in relation to the care of clients with a problem with skeletals
such as the bone fracture. In connection to this, I learned that Balance Skeletal Traction
functions as a means to realign your bones after a severe fracture. I learned its underlying
principles that must be strictly followed in order to prevent any circumstances that could harm
the patient. Aside from this, I was also able to learn the nursing responsibilities and
consideration with patients who have traction, especially the patients’ safety and comfort, and
as well as the health teachings. The experience became beneficial as it really exposes us to the
idea of how the Balance Skeletal Traction is carried out, as this skills laboratory truly enables us
to gain experience and confidence in our nursing abilities in order to provide the groundwork for
giving patients and families in the clinical context safe, effective care.

To conclude, the overall clinical instructor teaching technique becomes effective as it

really utilizes everyone's knowledge into skills. And this proves that the skills lab is truly a
learning ground for clinical skills. And this experience will enable us to become an effective
nurse in the future that gives quality care.

Reflection: What I have learned from the activity
NCM 117 SKILLS LABORATORY

In these learning skills, the knowledge consists of ideas regarding the mental status of a
client. This knowledge is vital to be learned as the context is complex due to the fact that we are
dealing with the thinking or mentality of our patient.

In this skills laboratory I learned that our topic is all about the Mental Status Assessment
which mainly evaluates different areas of cognitive function of a client. These areas involve
eight components which each component also consists of its own parameters. I realized that it
is really important to learn these learning skills because as I have learned the mental status
evaluation can aid in determining the difference between mood disorders, thought disorders,
and cognitive impairment in a client who suffers a problem. Additionally, in this assessment it
determines the patient's consciousness and response in general, I learned that it examines the
clients’ orientation, memory, judgment, and mental process, as well as the patient's conduct and
mood should also be evaluated concurrently because once a patient is assessed it serves its
purpose to identify coping mechanisms and strengths in mental health as well as to test for any
dysfunction.

To conclude, I realized that Mental Status Assessment surely is important as it enables a

health worker to recognize the early signs of altered mental status, identify the underlying
cause, and to provide the appropriate care for a client who suffers from mental difficulties.
