PROPOSED DESIGN REPORT OF BRIDGES AT
CONTENT
1) Introduction
This design document describes in brief about the methodology adopted by the work
“Bridges design at Kalingal Odai, Kombaiaaru, Tenkasi district under NABARD scheme 2021-
2022”. The document sets out analysis, design of various structural elements of RCC Bridges.
2) Scope of Work
Preparing design and detailing of RCC T-beam and slab Bridge with suitable abutment and
piers & retaining wall. Applying corresponding dead loads, live loads, hydrostatic loads and earth
pressure to the structure and designed as per codal provisions.MS excel and Staad pro is used for
design and analysis.
3) Design Methodology
After deciding the type of bridge, span arrangement and span length assume suitable first trial
cross section of foundations and deck in concrete with the method of construction. Hence establish a
loading sequence. For each load in the sequence check moment and shear under IRC load
combinations. The resultant of forces must not exceeding resisting forces.
Establish deck load and live load reactions on pier/abutment under consideration from
quick preliminary analysis and design.
Estimate wind load, static equivalent seismic force and active earth pressure forces at
various levels and at base of foundation.
Estimate total loads and moment about the bridge longitudinal and transverse direction
respectively due to dead, live, braking and water.
Analyze and design the deck slab, longitudinal girder, cross beams, bearings, piers,
abutment, return wall, dirt wall.
For design purpose 1m length of abutment is considered for analysis. A staad model is
prepared for design of abutment stem. The design moments from staad analysis were used to design
procedure of abutment respectively.
4) Materials
Concrete grade: M30 (Design Mix) for superstructure RCC slab, substructure,
approach slab.
Concrete grade: M35 (Design Mix) for RCC T Beam.
Concrete grade: M40 (Design Mix) for crash barrier.
Reinforcement: Fe 500D High yield strength deformed bars.
Clear cover: 40mm for superstructure and 75 mm for substructure and
foundation below ground level.
5) Design Standards
The following design codes are used for the design of structure.
IRC 6 2014.
IRC 21 2000
IRC 83 2018
IRC 5 1998
IRC 112 2011.
IRC SP 13 2004.
SP 16 1980 DESIGN AIDS to IS 456.
6) Design Loads
The dead loads on structure are due to self-weight of structural elements, wearing coat and
additional utilities. The vehicular live load is as per IRC class AA & IRC class, A loading type. The
wheel load is practically considered as concentrated load on slab. This load will get dispersed along
particular length and widthwise of the slab by Effective width method and Piegeaud’s coefficient
method.

CALCULATION OF FORCES & MOMENTS
1.Active earth pressure
The intensity of active earth pressure is calculated using Formula given under clause 214.1.1.1 of IRC 6-2014
[Amendment oct. 2014].The centre of pressure exerted by the back fill, when considered dry is located at an
elevation of 0.42 of the height of the wall above the base and 0.33 of height of wall when considered wet.
