Shri Gulabrao Deokar Polytechnic: Shri Krishna Educational and Cultural Mandal's

This document is a micro project report submitted by students of Shri Gulabrao Deokar Polytechnic in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, India. The report is about systems of units and is guided by their instructor Rangrez Mam. It discusses four common systems of units - CGS, MKS, FPS, and SI systems. It defines fundamental and derived units, and examples of each. It also compares the fundamental quantities and units between the four systems. The report applies systems of units to measurements in technical and scientific fields to avoid confusion.

System of Units
Introduction :
There are as many units as there are inclependent quantities which are
independent of each other . Hence they have three separate units for their
measurement . Hence it is reassured to defined system of units .

A system of unit is collection of units in which ertain units are choosen as

fundamental and all others derived from them . This system is also called as
absolute system of units .

In most system the mass , length and time are considered to be fundamental
quantities and their units are called fundamental units .

The some system of units which are in common use .

Definition of unit :

The started used for measurement of a physical quantity is called as unit of

that quantity .

Requirments of unit :

1. It should be definite and well defined .

2. It should be univarsaly accepted .
3. It should be invariable with time and place .
4. It should be easily reproducible and non – perishable .
5. It should be easily comparable with other similar units .
6. It is should be such that quantities measured with it should not be too
larger or too small .it should be readily available .

There are two types of units :

• Fundamental unit :

The units used to measured fundamental quantities are called fundamental

units .

Example :

Meter – m
Second – s

Kilogram – kg

Kelvin – K

Ampere – A

Candela – mol

• Derived units :

The units of derived quantities which depend on fundamental units for their
measurement are called derived units .

Example :

Square meter – m2

Cubic meter – m3

Meter per second – m/s

Kilogram per meter – kg/m

Joule – J

Definition of system of units :

All the fundamental units and derived units taken together from a set of
system of units and this set is called a system of units .

There are four system of units :

• CGS system of units : In this systemof units the units of length , mass and
time are centimwter , gram and second respectively are called CGS
system of units .
• MKS system of units : In this system of units the units of length , mass
and time are meter , kilogram and second respectively are called MKS
system of units
• FPS system of units : In this system of units the units of length , mass and
time are foot , pound and secomd respectively are called FPS system of
units
• SI system of units : It is nothing but abbreviation of French name system
international . It is also known as international system of units .

• Supplementary quantities :

Supplementary quantities Supplementary units Symbol of unit

Plane Angle Radian rad
Solid Angle Steradian sr
Application of system of units :

system of units is an universally accepted so that are used in universally in

technical and scientific research to avoid the confusion with the units .

having a standard unit system is important because it helps the measurments

in one set of unit system .
Introduction to logarithms:
Logarithms are commonly credited to a scottish mathematician named John napier whe
constructed a table of values that allowed, multiplications to be performe by additions of the
values from the table... Logarithms are used in many situations such as: a logarithmic Scales:
the most common example of these are pH, sound and earthquake intensity 67 logarithm laws
are used in psycology, Music

And other fields of study.

1) In mathematical Modeling: logarithm can be used to assist in determining the equation
between variables.

I logarithms were used by most high-school students for calculations prior to scientific
calculators being used. This involved using a mathematical table book Cantaining logarithm.
Sude rules were also used prior to the introdution of scientific calculators. The design of this
device was based on a scale rather than a linear Scale

There is a strong link between numbers written in exponential form and

logarithms, so before starting logs, let's review same : concepts of exponents (Indices)
and exponent rules.

Proof
Definition of a lagarithm.
" When you think about logarithms your Should think about exponent (indices)
The number 32 can be written as 25
As a logarithm this can be.
written as 109, 325
A few more examples: 625= 4 625=54 is equivalent to written log, 1000.000 = 10° is equivalent
to written logo 1000000 = 6 1024 = 9th is equivalent to written log 102.4. 10
Intergal & fecretional exponents are
also
posible
1=1=2" is equivalent to written toga 1. 8 23 8 -31 52525 =2505 is equivalent" """ to written
tog25 5 -0.5 1=7° is equivalent. to written log 1=0
Generaliving all of the about: If a number () is written as a power with a base (b) & an exponent
(e), such as N=be then log, N= e.
The base, b, must be a positive number (byo).. the band not equal to ↓ (b+1)
The number, N. must also be. Positive (N>0)
* Finding Ing values:
Finding log values:
Your scientific calculator can find the values of logs Most scientific calculatoε have two
logarithmic functions ordinary logarithms and natural logarithm.

·Bedinary logarithm 1. have a liage of 10 Because fuse use a have to number system; it seems
straigh forward that logs, with a base of 10. are wed- the lug key on a scientific calculatos has
the appearance g.

"When you are calculating the lug of a number, you can assume it is with a base of ten unless it
is indicated otherwise.

In an ordinary logarithm, when you find the ing of a number you are finding the exponent
when La base of 10 is wed Find the value of log 25 (meaning log 96)

- on your calculator, the sequence, the sequence of •kee keys is [ad 139194000 9 If log 25 = 1-
3,97940009 this can be written in. exponential forms as 25 10 1-397940009

Natural logarithms: Natural logarithms have a base of e. You may already know about π (p)
which is a constant used in situations involving circles. or cyclic events.. The constant e is used
in. situation involving such good growth and demy as population growth
The conttant e has a value 2-1183 (rounded to 4 decimal places) The natural log key on
a scientific Calculator •has the appearance gen).

The natural N log of a number can be written TO or loge n. When I you find the natural
log of a number, you are finding the exponent when a base of e (2.7183) is used.

• find the value of in 25 (which is equivalent to loge 25) → on your calculator, the
sequence of keys is: in 14500 = 9.5 In 12 5 3.218875825 The In 25 = 3.218875925 which
in exponential form. is 25 = 3.218375 8.25

Other Bases :-

Finding the value of a logarithm to a base,

The log laws are covered in another section. The

other CalculatGE. than 10 er e can be performed on you. However, this requires the use
of one of log laws.

This law allows a logarition with a given base to a be changed to a new base, the new
base being one that is avaible on your calculator that + is base 10 or base e.
