Beowulf Project
Objectives:
1. Research the Anglo-Saxon time period while creating a final project
2. Analyze different aspects of a heroic epic
3. Create a project that highlights your understanding of the material
4. Exhibit strong public speaking skills when presenting your information to the
class
Graduation Project:
If you still need to complete a Graduation Project before graduating in May, then you
may use this project to fulfill the requirements.
Directions: Read through all of the options before choosing one. You will be required to
fulfill all expectations within the outlined assignment. You will also be given numerous
deadlines throughout this process. The deadlines have been created to keep you focused.
Failure to meet the requirements of each deadline will result in a deduction in academic
points.
Option 1
The legend of Beowulf contains many vivid scenes. Choose five scenes that you think
highlight the main events, themes, characters, etc. Draw each of those scenes on a
separate sheet of paper. You are encouraged to explore different artistic techniques and
tools as you complete the art aspect of this project.
Essay: Write a three to five page essay that explains the importance of each picture.
You will need to provide a minimum of two direct quotes from the text to support your
explanation of each picture.
Presentation: You will matte and mount your pictures to a presentation board and
share your insights with the class.
Option 2
Write a five page analysis paper in which you explore how the story of Beowulf is
reflected in the recent terrorist events. You may include other historical events as
examples if you so choose. You must define a modern-day Beowulf, as well as a
modern-day Grendel. How does this Grendel attack ones way of life? How are modern-
day values reflected in Beowulf and his actions? How might Beowulf defeat this
Grendel? Are there relatives of Grendel lurking about waiting their turn to attack? This
Beowulf does not have to kill this Grendel. What other outcomes might there be and are
they acceptable?
Presentation: Give an overview of your thoughts and opinions. Highlight your views
with a Power Point that shows pictures from Beowulf as well as the terroristic actions
you are analyzing.
Option 4
The concept of a “hero” is a universal one; the characteristics of a hero span centuries.
Write a five page essay where you compare and contrast Beowulf with a hero from
popular culture, such as Indiana Jones, Batman, Luke Skywalker, etc. What makes each
character heroic? You will need to first explore the concept of the “hero.” You will also
need to spend some time researching the “epic hero.” Use specific examples from the
epic and the movie to support your ideas. Page 29 in your anthology will provide a
bulleted list of characteristics.
You should be familiar with the movie or book you will be referencing. You should take
detailed notes about the hero, and compare your notes to the characteristics on page 29.
Presentation: Create a Power Point that demonstrates a thorough understanding of a
hero’s characteristics. You will need to include specific examples from the text when
you are analyzing Beowulf’s actions. You should include pictures to support your slides.
Be sure to maintain a consistent presentation (slides should have the same background,
music, sounds, etc.)
Option 5
Tell the story of the battle in Beowulf ’s own words in a journal entry or television or
newspaper interview. Be sure to include Beowulf ’s feelings about watching the Geat
near him die, how he felt during the fight, a blow-by-blow description of the battle, how
he felt about not being able to kill Grendel, and why he traveled to the bottom of the lake
to defeat Grendel’s mother.
You will need to write 20-30 questions that an interviewer might ask Beowulf, and then
you need to create responses that he might give. Beowulf’s responses must be at least
five descriptive sentences in length (one paragraph).
Presentation: Have a friend read the part of the interviewer or Beowulf and you read the
other part.
Option 7
Write a story or play about the events leading up to the dragon taking the treasure. You
may use the existing characters or create new characters. The story must be five pages in
length. You will create an epic battle with Beowulf as the hero. You may write about a
battle with a monster other than the dragon, his journey to the dragon, or his life as king
of the Geats. You will demonstrate an understanding of Beowulf as you create scenes
that are similar to those described in the epic.
Presentation: You will extract the main points of your story and use those to guide your
presentation. You will use Power Point and enhance each slide with a picture that
captures some aspect of the scene you are describing.
Grade: 200 Points
Essay: 100 points. The Pennsylvania Writing Rubric will be used to assess your essay.
Presentation: 50 points. The attached Public Speaking Rubric will be used to assess your
verbal presentation. While a Power Point is not required it will help you keep your
information organized.
Participation: 50 points. I will be observing your class participation throughout the
course of this project. I will make notes on your research skills, your ability to focus on
the task, the amount of work you produce in a period, your interaction with your peers.
Your Behavior Point Sheet is an excellent source to use for gauging your participation
points.
