A kitchen knife is any knife that is intended to be used in food
preparation. While much of this work can be accomplished with a
few general-purpose knives – notably a large chef's knife,
a tough cleaver, a small paring knife and some sort of serrated
blade (such as a bread knife or serrated utility knife) – there are
also many specialized knives that are designed for specific tasks.
Kitchen knives can be made from several different materials.
Spatula is a hand-held tool that is used for lifting,
flipping, or spreading. Spatulas have a handle that is
long enough to keep the holder's hand away from what is
being lifted or spread, as well as away from a hot
surface. Spatulas are usually made of plastic or metal,
but wooden, rubber and silicone ones are also
sometimes used. Metal spatulas generally have a wood
or plastic handle to insulate them from the heat.

A colander is a kitchen utensil that is primarily used to

rinse vegetables or strain foods such as pasta. The bottom
is perforated, which allows for water or liquid to drain
through while holding on to the solids inside. Colanders
are often made out of light metals such as aluminum or
thin stainless steel, although they can also be made out of
plastic, silicone, ceramic, or enamelware. Usually, they
have a bowl shape to them; you may have seen what is
known as a mated colander pot. This is a colander that is
placed on top of a pot and appears lifted up from it a bit.

A dredger is a large shaker. It looks like

an aluminum cheese shaker in a pizza parlor.
It has large holes in the top, and may have a
domed or flat top. It may have a handle or not.
This device allows a cook to sprinkle flour on to
a piece of meat, on top of dough, or on anything
that needs a coating of flour.

A tool that is used to continually keep edges of knife blades

straight to maintain a sharp edge after each use. When a blade is
repeatedly pushed against a cutting surface, it becomes dull and
out of alignment or curled to one side or the other depending on
how the knife is held during use. Although a slight curl or dullness
in the blade is difficult to detect with the human eye, it is this
repeated occurrence that requires a blade to be refreshed with a
sharpening steel as often as possible. It is a common sight to see
a chef carving or slicing meat and then using a steel to
continually freshen the blade while cutting the meat. The
procedure of freshening the blade simply allows the knife to
remain continually straight or sharp and in excellent shape
throughout the cutting activities.

A grater, also known as a shredder, is a kitchen

utensil used to grate foods into fine pieces. Several
types of graters feature different sizes of grating
slots, and can therefore aid in the preparation of a
variety of foods. They are commonly used to
grate cheese and lemon or orange peel (to
create zest), and can also be used to grate other
soft foods. They are commonly used in the
preparation of toasted cheese, Welsh rarebit, egg
salad, and dishes which contain cheese sauce such
as macaroni and cheese, cauliflower cheese.

A measuring cup is a cup that is primarily used

to measure the volume of liquids such as water, oil,
milk, etc., or to measure powdered substances, like
flour, sugar, washing powder, etc. Generally, there
are two types of measuring cups:
 Dry measuring cups (used for measuring powders)
 Liquid measuring cups (used for measuring liquids)
A measuring spoon is a spoon used to measure an
amount of an ingredient, either liquid or dry, when cooking.
Measuring spoons may be made of plastic, metal, and
other materials. They are available in many sizes,
including the teaspoon and tablespoon.
A whisk is a cooking utensil which can be used to
blend ingredients smooth or to incorporate air into a mixture, in a
process known as whisking or whipping. Most whisks consist of a
long, narrow handle with a series of wire loops joined at the end.
The loops can have different shapes depending on a whisk's
intended functions. The wires are usually metal, but some
are plastic for use with nonstick cookware. Whisks are also made
from bamboo. Whisks are commonly used to whip egg whites into
a firm foam to make meringue, or to whip cream into whipped
cream

Designed with a broad spoon base, this utensil serves several purposes when
preparing foods. The Ladle is a kitchen tool that can be used to serve foods, such
as sauces, gravies, and toppings as well as skim and stir ingredients. Ladles can be
classified for specific purposes such as a Gravy Ladle or a Skimming Ladle and
each is designed differently in order to accomplish the intended task. Ladles used
for serving are made with a deeper bowl in the spoon and may be somewhat short
handled. Ladles that are used when cooking, such as Skimming Ladles are built
with longer handles to keep hands away for hot liquids and ingredients. Ladles are
made in numerous shapes, sizes and from a variety of materials, such as stainless
steel, sterling silver or plastic. When selecting, consider the task and the type of
foods most often being prepared or served in order to purchase a Ladle best suited
for the functions desired.

The main use of a freezer is to store food at a cool
temperature and preserve its taste, texture, and
freshness. This way, favorite meals and desserts
can be consumed at later dates. However, a freezer
can also be used to preserve the quality of your
jeans or stretch shoes that are a little too tight for
you.

The microwave oven has been known as the kitchen appliance to go to for
reheating food. However, the microwave oven can be used for more than
just that. This appliance can be used to:
 Sanitize sponges and cutting boards used in the kitchens
 Steam vegetables for dinner
 Poach and scramble eggs for breakfast

A microwave oven uses electromagnetic radiation in order to heat up and

cook different types of food. Compared to a traditional oven, microwave
ovens are easier to use and can heat up or cook food in 10 minutes or less
without having to pre-heat the appliance. This is because medium and
large microwaves have higher wattage that will range from 850 watts to
1650 watts and can reheat food in 2 minutes.
A blender (sometimes called a mixer) is
a kitchen and laboratory appliance used to mix,
crush, purée or emulsify food and other substances. A stationary blender
consists of a blender container with a rotating metal blade at the bottom,
powered by an electric motor that is in the base. Some powerful models
can also crush ice and other frozen foods. The newer immersion
blender configuration has a motor on top connected by a shaft to a rotating
blade at the bottom, which can be used with any container.

The fundamental reason for having a refrigerator is to keep food cold.
Cold temperatures help food stay fresh longer. The basic idea behind
refrigeration is to slow down the activity of bacte- ria (which all food
contains) so that it takes longer for the bacteria to spoil the food.
.

Steamers are used primarily to cook vegetables, seafood, and other

foods where moisture retention is essential to visual appearance and taste.
Food cooked in a steamer also maintains more of its nutritional value.
A broiler is an element in your oven – usually located near the top – that
provides high, direct heat much like a grill. Broiling places food close to
your oven's heating element so that it can quickly cook, brown, char
or caramelize. This can give food more complex flavors or help you
achieve certain textures.
A pressure cooker is a tightly sealed cooking pot that cook’s food
with high pressure.
Pressure cooking cooks faster because of high pressure:

1. Increases the liquid’s boiling point – At standard pressure, when

the liquid boils and turns into steam, the liquid will stay at the same
temperature no matter how long you continue to boil it.  However,
you can increase the temperature past the boiling point by adding
pressure. So, food cooks faster under pressure using the extra hot
steam.
2. Forces the extra hot liquid into the food – Imagine putting your
hand over the boiling water compare to putting your hand in the
oven. The steam is the one that immediately burns because steam
is very efficient in transferring heat. With pressure cooking, it’s like
there’s an extra force pushing this extra high and fast heat energy
into the food. That’s why the food cooks faster than usual.
Ranges

A range is a stove with an oven and has a source of fuel which is either gas or
electricity. It is more like an all in one oven and stove. It is a common kitchen
appliance in many homes as it combines both a stove and an oven, therefore,
more preferred than most people than buying each appliance separately.

A toaster is a kitchen appliance for toasting food such as sliced bread,

crumpets, and bagels. Toasted bread is called toast. A typical toaster
uses heat radiated from hot electric elements to heat a piece of bread.
Mixers help automate the repetitive tasks of stirring, whisking
or beating. When the beaters are replaced by a dough hook, a
mixer may also be used to knead. A mixer may be a handheld
mechanism known as an eggbeater, a handheld motorized
beater, or a drill mixer.
