Performance Practices during the Romantic Period

I. Learning Competency with Code

Explains the performance practice (setting, composition, role of

composers/performers, and audience) during Classical Period (MU9RO-lllb-h-
3)

II. Background Information for Learners

The Romantic Period had distinct performance practices as to the quality and
attributes of the setting in music history, composition, roles of composers, role of
performers, and role of audience. Study the table below:

Performance Practices during the Romantic Period

1. Setting The Romantic began with the second quarter of the

Nineteenth Century. It should be noted, however, that
throughout the history of music there has been a tension
between the classical and romantic views of life and art.
Objectivity versus subjectivity, form versus freedom, and
individuality versus universality are issues that
composers and other artists have confronted in very
age.

2. Composition As to musical compositions, it became increasingly

expressive and inventive. Expansive symphonies,
virtuosic piano music, dramatic operas and passionate
songs took inspiration from art and literature. The
romantic era is known for its intense energy and
passion. It was greater expression, and music grew
closer to art, literature and theatre. During the Romantic
period, the piano (pianoforte) became the most popular
single instrument. It became a musical symbol of
Romanticism, and was enlarged to give it a wider range
and more tonal power. The orchestra grew to be the
favorite large instrument of the century.

3. Role of composers At its core, composers of the Romantic period saw
music as a means of individual and emotional
expression. Indeed, they considered music the art most
capable of expressing the full range of human emotion.
As a result, romantic composers broadened the scope
of emotional content. Music was expected to
communicate to the audience, often by using a narrative
form that told distinct stories.

4. Role of performers Roman composers are were likely to also be performers

and/or conductors. The virtuoso had both extraordinary
technical proficiency and widespread acclaim. The
origins of the musical virtuoso are both artistic and
practical. Romanticism is about self-expression,
particularly through an artist’s self-expression. Thus,
Romantic performers felt free to strain and twist the
Classical musical forms in increasingly personal ways.
Today we call it “branding”. Yet even then, Romantic
performers were searching for a way to develop their
voice through their music, one which was recognizable
to audiences.

5. Role of audience Many times their audience was small, composed mostly
of the upper class and individuals who were
knowledgeable about music. The Romantic composers,
on the other hand, often wrote for public concerts and
festivals, with large audiences of paying customers, who
had not necessarily had any music lessons.
