Week 4 LO 3. Access information using a computer

The desktop is a fundamental part of the default GUI (graphical user

interface) in Windows. It is a space where you can organize applications,
folders, and documents, which appear as icons. Your desktop is always in the
background; behind any other applications you are running.

Parts of a desktop

places (Documents, Pictures, Music, Games, Computer, Control
Panel), with "most recently used" lists for quick access to recently
used programs and documents.

presence. While technically the taskbar spans the entire bar from the
Start button to the notification area, in most contexts taskbar refers
to the area in between, containing the taskbar buttons.
3. Notification area. A short-term source for notifications and status, as
well as an access point for system- and program-related features that
have no presence on the desktop.
4. Icon. A small graphical representation of a program or file. When you
double-click an icon, the associated file or program will be opened.
5. File. A file is an object on a computer that stores data, information,
settings, or commands used with a computer program.
6. Folder. A folder, also called a directory, is a space used to store files,
other folders, and shortcuts on a computer.

LO 5. Use of basic functions of a www-browser to locate information

The Internet is a global network of billions of computers and other electronic

devices. With the Internet, it's possible to access almost any information,
communicate with anyone else in the world, and do much more.

5
You can do all of this by connecting a computer to the Internet, which is also
called going online. When someone says a computer is online, it's just another
way of saying it's connected to the Internet.

The World Wide Web—usually called the Web for short—is a collection of
different websites you can access through the Internet. A website is made up
of related text, images, and other resources. Websites can resemble other
forms of media—like newspaper articles or television programs—or they can
be interactive in a way that's unique to computers.

Browser. Alternatively referred to as a web browser or Internet browser, a

browser is a software program to present and explore content on the World
Wide Web.
