Week 3-Motivation and Behavioural Change

This document provides an overview of topics related to motivation and behavioral change that were covered in a lecture. It includes housekeeping items about assignments and tutorials. The lecture then covered the importance of theory to exercise psychology and discussed several theories of motivation and behavior change - the Theory of Planned Behavior, Social Cognitive Theory, Self-Determination Theory, and concepts of intention, self-efficacy, and the motivation continuum. Examples and a case study were provided. Students were reminded of important points and next steps.

Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)
Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)
Bandura, 1977

Human functioning is explained in terms of a model of triadic

reciprocality in which behavior, cognitive and other personal
factors, and environmental events all operate as interacting
determinants of each other
Self-Efficacy

successful in performing the desired behaviour
given the abilities they possess and the situation
in which they find themselves

 situation-specific form of self-confidence

Rate Your Self-Efficacy

 Can you successfully throw the ball to a given

student sitting in the first row?
 Would your self-efficacy change if the task
was to throw the ball to a student in the fifth
row?
 What about if you had to throw the ball into a
trash can at the very back of the classroom?

Case Study

Pretend for a moment that you are a sport psychologist on

the Track & Field team.
Tara is a first-year student recruited to the Track & Field
varsity team at the University of Toronto. She is extremely
excited to represent the university. However, with the
transition to university and her coursework, she worries
about time management and not being able to attend
practice as often. She has a 100-meter sprint competition
coming up next month and thinks that she will let the team
down.
Using the Self-Efficacy Theory as a guiding framework, how
will you improve Tara’s self-beliefs?
Self-Determination Theory
(SDT)
Self-Determination Theory (SDT)
(Deci & Ryan, 2000)

People seek challenges to satisfy 3 basic psychological needs:

Motivation as a Continuum

Important Points to Know

➢ Why is theory important?

➢ What are the main constructs of each of the models and
theories discussed?
➢ How do these constructs lead to exercise participation (i.e.,
what are the proposed pathways)?
➢ What are some strategies that you can use to modify these
constructs?
➢ Identify and similarities and differences between different
models and theories.
