Assignment - 04

MA2201-Engineering Mathematics IV
B.Tech. IV Sem (CSE/IT/CCE)

Topic Covered: F & t- distributions, Sampling theory, Central limit theorem, Point estimation, MLE,
Interval estimation.

S. Questions
No.
1. Suppose a U.S. car rental firm wants to estimate the average number of miles travelled per day by
each of its cars rented in California. A random sample of 20 cars rented in California reveals that
the sample mean travel distance per day is 85.5 miles, with a population standard deviation of 19.3
miles. Compute 99% confidence interval to estimate 𝜇.
2. For a 𝑁 (𝜇, 𝜎2) population with variance equal to 9, Construct a 95% confidence interval for the
parametric function 𝑟(𝜃) = 2𝜇 + 7, based on the random sample size 25, giving a sample mean of
30.
3. Find the maximum likelihood estimate for the parameter 𝜆 of the Poisson distribution on the basis of
a sample of size 𝑛. Also find its variance.

4. A manager wants an estimate of average sales of salesman in his company. A random sample of
121 out of 600 salesmen is selected using without replacement and average is found to be Rs. 760.
If the population standard deviation is Rs. 150, manager specifies a 99% level of confidence. What
is the interval estimate for population mean 𝜇.
5. Consider a population consisting of the three values 2,5 and 8. Draw all possible samples of size 2
with replacement from the population. Construct sampling distribution of means. Also find the
mean and standard error of the distribution.

6. Let x1 = 0.7, x2 = 1.5, x3 = 0.3, x4 = 0.5, , x5 = 3.4

be a sample of size 5 from a distribution having pdf
𝑓(𝑥, 𝜃) = 𝜃𝑒−𝜃𝑥, 𝑥 > 0, 𝜃 > 0.
Find the MLE of 𝜃.
7. A random sample of size 100 is taken from a population whose mean is 60 and variance is 400.
Using CLT, with what probability can we assent that the mean of the sample will not differ from
𝜇 = 60 by more than 4?

8. A population consists of the following elements: 2, 4, 5, 8, 11

Find:
(i) How many different samples of size 3 are possible when sampling is done without
replacement?
(ii) List all the possible different samples
(iii) Compute the mean of each of the samples given in part(ii)
(iv) Find the sampling distribution of sample mean.
If all the elements are equally likely, compute the value of the population mean.
9. A cigarette manufacturer wishes to use random sampling to estimate the average nicotine content.
The sampling error should not be more than one milligram above or below the true mean with a 99
percent confidence coefficient. The population standard deviation is 4 milligrams. What sample
size should the company use to satisfy these requirements?
_
10. A sample of size 9 from a normal population gave x = 15.8 and Sx2 = 10.3 . Find a 99% interval for
population mean.

11. A random sample of size 100 has mean 15, the population variance being 25. Find the interval
estimate of the population mean with a confidence level of (i) 99% (ii) 95%

2 (64.648, 69.352) 10 [11.9864, 19.6136]

3 𝜆 = 𝑥̅ , 𝑉(𝜆 ̂ ) = 𝜆/𝑛 11 (i) [13.71, 16.29] (ii) [14.02, 15.98]
