Lab 9 Three Phase Inverters

This document provides an overview of Experiment 9 which involves understanding the operation and function of a three-phase inverter circuit. The objectives are to simulate and test a three-phase full bridge inverter that accepts a DC input from a bridge rectifier. The tasks involve simulating the inverter with resistive and inductive Y-connected loads using different control schemes including 180 degree square wave operation, PWM with variable duty cycle, 120 degree square wave operation, and sinusoidal PWM operation. Equipment needed includes a DC supply, oscilloscope, MOSFETs, optocoupler, gate driver, variable resistances, and a microcontroller.

9.1 Tasks

The circuit diagram of a three-phase full bridge inverter is shown in Figure 9.1. The operational
requirements are:

93
94 EXPERIMENT 9. THREE-PHASE INVERTERS

• Inverter frequency f = 50 Hz.

• Isolated gate pulses (for hardware circuit only)

• For high frequency PWM (TLP250 is suggested)

Figure 9.1: TLP494 Circuit for PWM Generation

Simulate three phase full bridge inverter with resistive and Inductive load. The power rating
of the load should be about 25 Watts/Phase. You should use opto-coupler while providing
gate pulses to power electronic switches for isolation of pulse source from power circuit (for
hardware circuit only). In hardware you are supposed to use either TLP250 or PC817. For the
six gate pulses, you are supposed to use a microcontroller (for hardware circuit only). Following
simulations are required:

• Three phase inverter with resistive and inductive Y-connected load with 180 degree square
wave operation.

• Three phase inverter with resistive and inductive Y-connected load with 180 degree and
PWM operation (Variable duty-cycle of PWM waveform).

• Three phase inverter with resistive and inductive Y-connected load with 120 degree square
wave operation (50 Hz output)

• Three phase inverter with resistive and inductive Y-connected load with Sinusoidal PWM
operation (controllable modulation index and frequency)
