ICT TOOLS: Fauits in ICT tools
Introduction
In this unit you will lean about the common faults found when using ICT tools
‘and how to fix them. You will further discuss how fo disassemble and assemble
ICT tools. This will help to deal with the most common faults when they do
happen.
Preparation exercise
In groups of three, discuss any thiee faults that you have encountered during|
lesson in the computer laboratory.
Key words
Troubleshooting - solving problems proactively: the computer finds and
eliminates problems as one will be selecting the appropriate options
from menus given.
Diagnosing - identifying a fault ot taking an examination of the cause of a
problem or error in the computer,
‘Computer bug - an error in software or hardware. In software, a bug is an
error in coding oF logic that causes a programme to malfunction or
to produce inconect results.
Software - computer programmes and instructions that cause the
hardware machines to do work.Hardware - equipment involved in the function of a computer, Computer
hardware consists of the components that can be physically handled.
[Assemble - putting components to fit ihe parts of a computer together to.
make a finished whole, for example a mouse.
Disassemble - fo take pieces of a computer or component apart.
Topic 1: Diagnosing and fixing faults in
ICT tools
Everyone would like to work on a computer that Is perfectly working all the
time. However, this might not be always possible due to common problems
that we encounter. Two major computer problems are:
) Hardware faults
'b) Software fauits,
Software faults are problems that affect the computer programs like an error
that causes a progam to malfunction ot to produce incorrect results. For
‘example, fallure to open a program or slowness in opening a program. More
severe software faults can cause a programme to "hang up" (stop responding
to commands) and might leave the user with no choice but fo restart the
programme, thereby losing whatever previous work not saved.
Hardwore faults are physical problems that prevent a system or set of
components from working propertly together. They can also be classified as
fauls in on actucl component. For example, an electrical failure, ¢ keyboard
not typing, speakers not producing sound (fallure in configuration of the
component)
‘A hardware problem can be seen when a computer is having trouble in
starting propery, shuts down or acts up at random and seemingly restarts
itself ot random.
The table below describes common technical problems and how they may
be fixed.

Topic 2: Disassembling a computer
To disassemble Is to take pieces of a computer or its components apart
Disassembiing a machine requires one to have knowledge of the complete
system. Health and safety awareness and safety precautions are very important.
The computer system
The computer system is made up of monitor, keyboard, mouse, modem,
system unit, printer ot scanner if itis mounted on and speakers. The system unit
which is sometimes called the tower, box, cabinet or simply a case contains
the electronic components of a computer like power supply, different dives,

2 Database queries
Objectives
By the end of this unit, you should be able to:
use query design wizard to create queries,
add a criteria to a query.
Modily queries to refine search results,
design reports using wizard.
Introduction
Data may be duplicated in two or more files, creating unnecessary file
Maintenance issues and inconsistency. Thus, there is need for a combined
file system called a database.
You now know how to create and enter data into a database and how to
create forms and reports. in this unit we are going to explore about creating a
query using the query design wizard. A query is ike a question. It is ike asking
the computer database to give you results of exactly what you are looking
for, The unit will further explore about query modification. To modity is to make
some small changes.
Preparation exercise
Capture data of fen new learners in your class into a database table and
create a form.
Key words
Database - any collection of data that is organised for storage in a
computer memory. The data may be in the form of text, numbers,
‘of encoded graphics.
‘Query - a question or request for information using specified standard in a
database,‘Query design view — displays the query arid where one can create and
modify queties.
Datasheet view ~ shows the result of a query design.
‘Condition - another word for criterion. It is a way of telling the query which
ata one is interested in seeing.
Criteria - when the condition has two or more parts fo it, the two conditions
cate called criteria,
| Run — when one opens a query object, one runs the query,
| Field value — data entered into a field,
‘Query design button - creates a new, blank query in design view.
Topic 1: Creating queries using the
design wizard
Once you have created tables and loaded them with data, there is need to
retrieve this data for use, A query is used to make this data available as per
owner's specification.
A query is an access object used to view, analyse, or modify data. The query
design determines the fields and records you see and the sorting order.
Queries also alow some to join two or more telated tables, create data,
‘amend, update or delete records based on specified criteria. Only a query
design is stored in the database, Wnen a query is run, it rettieves data as
specified by the query design. Query results are used as the basis for reports,
displayed in forms or used to create other queries
Steps for creating queries
Step 1
(Open your Microsoft Access database then open an Access table from which
you want to create a query. if you have not yet created it, you have to create
new fable with the following fields: NAME, AGE, GENDER, CLUB, FEES PAID (It
there are new leamers)Step 2:Click Create then select the fable you want to display data,
Step 3:Click Design Wizard and select Simple query wizard, then click OK
Step 4:Choose the tables with the inforrnation you want fo be displayed e.g,

Videos can be for professional flming or a casual, small party video clip taken
by a smartphone.Preparation
Planning a video shoot needs one to state the expectations and specifications
of the final product. This is the pre-production stage. Here are some steps (In
question form) that one should take in planning fo shoot a video.
What is the purpose of the video?
What is the message from the clip?
What is the targeted audience?
How do you want the video to start and end?
When doing a professional shooting, what is the budget?
How would you distrioute and share the video?
Choose a location — what location will you use to shoot the video?
‘At what time of the day? A location should not interrupt with the
shooting for example, opening of doors.
What equipment are you going to need to make a shoot?
Do you need to purchase, rent or improvise?
Do you need memory cards, USB dtive, tape or DVD?
Who will be assisting with your shooting? Do you need someone to
hold the microphone?
Did you ask for permission from the authorities to shoot the video?
For example, your facilitator it you want permission to go outside the
classroom to make a shoot?

the quality. To check on resolution: camera App > video mode > settings >
video quailty.
Step 4
