What Is It

We use tools every time we perform a certain work at home, school , factories and
in offices. How far we know the safety measures of using simple machines?
What would you like to know about the lesson on safety with simple machines?
What are some safety measures to prevent accidents in using simple
machines?

What are the safety measures of using sharp tools?

1.Use sharp tools under adult supervision. Ask for help if you
are having difficulty in cutting thick cardboard or chopping
tough meat.
2. Choose tools of the right size of your hands. Full-sized
scissors and knives might be too big for your hands and can
slip while in use.
3.When using sharp tools, like cutting paper using cutter blade,
chopping vegetables, or doing some sewing, give your full
attention on the task. Also make sure you have good lighting
so you can clearly see the tools and your hands.
4.Keep and return the sharp tools to their proper places. Put
knives in the holder in the kitchen. Keep scissors in the drawer
or cabinet. Keep needles and pins in sewing kit. Do not leave
those tools scattered around the house.

What are the safety measures of using ramps?

1. Look out for slippery spots. Avoid them.
2. Hold on to the handrails. They are there for that purpose.

3. Do not run down ramps. Do not race on ramps, or

anywhere outside racetracks.
4. Be extra careful in bringing down patients on
wheelchairs, children on strollers or grocery carts. It is
safer to walk backwards with your wheeled load in front
of you.

10
What are the safety measures of using pulleys?
1. Check that the ropes are of the right
gauge( thick enough ) and are in good
condition ( not yet brittle or frayed )
2. Make sure that the knots are tied correctly.
If you are not sure, have the experts check.
3. In zip lines, check the reputation of the
theme park and the competence of the
attendants. If you think the facilities. If you
think the facilities durability (the scaffolds,
the harness) or the competence of the
attendants is questionable, then don’t
continue with the ride.
4. Have safety nets and backup ropes in case
the main supporting rope snaps. For the
building cleaners, they clip themselves on
the scaffold with backup ropes.

What are the safety measures of using wheels and gears?

1. Do not in any situation, touch gears, motors or
belts of machines while they are running.
2. When tinkering with machines, with gears,
wheels or rubber belts (e.g. washing
machines) make sure they are turned off and
unplugged and will not turn on accidentally
while you are touching them.
3. Avoid having dangling stuff earrings, shawls
overly long ID straps, earphones and fancy
keychains near machines. These things could
get stuck into the wheels and gears of
machines.

Why should we handle simple machines properly? Are you doing these
suggested safety measures of using simple machine? Well, that’s good.

11
What’s More

Directions: Read the given situations. Draw if the practices in the use
of simple machine is safe and if the practices is unsafe.

______________1. Gem puts back the knife in the knife holder after using it.
______________ 2. Jerome checks the rope of the pulley first before using
it.
______________ 3. Joy is playing a pair of scissor.
______________ 4. Bling goes up the stairs carefully to avoid slipping.
______________ 5. Mang Jose checks the condition of the ladder before
using it.
______________ 6. Jojo is fond of getting near the construction site to watch
the heavy equipment moving.
______________ 7. Gerry is running with a knife on his hand.
______________ 8. Do not touch moving parts of a machine while they are
running.
______________ 9. Use the handrail when walking up on a stairs.
______________ 10.Dont do anything else with your hands like texting. They
are supposed to be on the hand grips.

Additional Activities

Everything we do becomes easier with simple machines. It is difficult to

perform a specific task without machines. How can we keep ourselves free
from dangers in using machines? How often you practice the practical and
safety measures?

What to do: Read each sentence. Put a check on the column which best
describes your practices.

My habits How Often?

I keep tools in a cabinet or in a safe place out of
reach of my younger brother and sister
I avoid getting hurt, I do not play sharp simple
machine.
In holding a sharp tool, I make sure its sharp
edge points downward facing the ground.
I Before using any simple machine, I check it to
make sure it is in good condition.
When playing an inclined plane like slides, make
sure that the end of the slide is secured before
using them. Make sure that nobody is present
below the slide.
When I use wheel and axle like bicycle I used
helmet. Make sure that the wheel and axle are
attached firmly to each other.
Total:
