10 EFFECT OF HEAT
ON SALTS
• Sulphate salts are more stable, they are not
easily decomposed when heated.
• Chloride salts do not decompose except NH4Cl
NH4Cl --------→ NH3 + HCl
IN GENERAL
Effect of heat on carbonate salt, CO32-

LCO3 --------→ LO + CO2

*L = METAL

Modul: pg 186, Latihan 83

Effect of heat on nitrate salt, NO3

LNO3 --------→ LO + O2 + NO2

*L = METAL

Modul: pg 186, Latihan 84

Observation on products of Carbonate
metal And Nitrate metal when heated
(decomposed)
(a) All metal oxides White solid
except PbO, ZnO, CuO
(b) Lead (II) oxide, PbO Hot: brown
Cool: yellow
(c) Zinc oxide, ZnO Hot: yellow
Cool: white
(d) Copper (II) oxide, Cu0 Black solid
GAS TESTS
Gas Observation Inference
test
A A glowing wooden Oxygen gas, O2 is
splinter relights released
when it is put in the
test tube
B A ‘pop’ sound is Hydrogen gas, H2 is
produced when a released
lighted wooden
splinter is put near
the mouth of the test
tube
C Limewater turns Carbon dioxide, CO2 is
cloudy released
Gas Observation Inference
test

D Moist red litmus paper Ammonia gas, NH3 is released

turns blue

Pungent smell

E Moist blue litmus paper Chlorine gas,Cl2 is released

turns red, then white
(decolourised)

A pungent greenish
yellow gas is produced

F White fumes formed Hydrogen chloride gas, HCl is

when a glass rod dipped released
in concen NH3 is put
near mouth of test tube
WHY MUST WE USE MOIST LITMUS PAPER?
RECALL BACK PROPERTIES OF ACID AND ALKALI IN WATER

ACID OR ALKALI ONLY SHOWS THEIR PROPERTIES IN THE PRESENCE

OF WATER. THAT IS WHY THE LITMUS PAPER MUST BE MOISTENED
WHY WHITE FUMES IS FORMED?
neutralisation

HCl (g) + NH3 (g) -----→ NH4Cl (s)

Gas Observation Inference
test

G The purple colour of Sulphur dioxide gas, SO2 is

acidified potassium released
manganate (VII) solution,
KMnO4 is decolourised

H A brown, pungent gas is Nitrogen dioxide gas, NO2 is

produced released

Moist blue litmus paper

turns red
Modul: pg 187-188,
Latihan 85, 86, 87 & 88
By comparing the colour change and
the gas released, we can identify the
cation and anion that might be present
in salt
