FOUNDATION ASSESSMENT
Background
The building is founded on a combination of strip footings and piles. A geotechnical desktop
study was performed in 2023, with the intent to review the available information about the site
conditions. Aurecon performed a detailed geotechnical study during 2009.

Refer to the following extracts from the memo:

Site Conditions

Strip footing Capacity

Pile Capacity

Lateral Load Capacities

Once the bending capacity of the piles has been assessed, the lateral capacity of each pile can be
assessed by inspection of the moment/load graphs in Appendix D or Table 5.

Soil-Structure Interaction Modelling

To capture the effect of the foundations on the structure, the foundations were modelled as a
series of line springs (under strip foundations) and point springs (under pad foundations)

Line Springs
The line spring properties were derived based on ASCE41-17 method as shown below:

From the geotechnical memo the soil elastic modulus was given as shown below:

The geotechnical engineer provided the formula (E = 2G(1+μ)) to calculate the shear modulus of the soil.

The line springs were parameters we input to into the Etabs model as shown below:

very stiff - is this achievable?

Point Springs
An initial Etabs model was run to assess the pile
demands. Pile locations were modelled as fixed
points. The tension demand on the piles were of
particular interest.

The results revealed tension demands ~1400kN.

From the existing geotechnical report, the pile's tension capacity is Tc = 0.5*225 = 112kN
The piles would fail early on, and the ability of the piles to hold down the foundations is not achievable. The
piles were modelled as compression-only point springs.

Strip Footing Bearing Capacity Check

The strip footings were checked for bearing pressure. The geotechnical report recommends assessing
against 600MPa. The demands shown below were extracted from the Etabs model. The results have
been found to be satisfactory.

Strip Footing Bending and Shear Capacity Check

The footings have a single layer of bottom reinforcement. They have been checked for the ability to
resist bearing demands.
Also, as the Etabs model was created with the foundations assisting in resisting the overturning of the
building (foundation self weight). The footings were checked for bending and shear under uplift
conditions.

Base Shear Capacity

The base shear capacity have been determined based on a combination of passive pressure and soil
friction from the strip footings.

* Base Friction capacities for each direction were

what's happening below ground floor level? looks like

foundation level is set far below ground level with walls

has the are under ground floor level been backfilled,
and if so can we get some passive resistance for these

The pile capacities were checked if they are able to displace by 20mm to engage the passive pressure
of the soil. Pile capacity was calculated using the figures at the back of the 2009 geotech report. the
capacity was calculated by determining the bending capacity of the pile. Using the figure below the
lateral capacity can be determined. The displacement associated with the pile lateral capacity can then
be determined.

All the piles were found to have sufficient capacity to displace 20mm.

The base shear of the building is scored against summing the total passive pressure and soil friction
resistance of the foundations . The piles have been excluded for the base shear resistance
why have the piles been excluded from base shear takeout?

if they are to be used, check top of pile detail. are the longitudinal
bars developed sufficiently?
