Multimedia: Audio or Video Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Animals Geographic regions

Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd grade science
Content Standard Addressed: S3L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the
similarities and
differences between plants, animals, and habitats found within geographic regions (Blue
Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau)
of Georgia
b. Construct an explanation of how external features and adaptations (camouflage, hibernation, migration,
mimicry) of animals allow them to survive in their habitat.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
1.1 Empowered Learner-Students articulate and set able to do by the end of this lesson:
personal learning goals, develop strategies I can identify how creatures features help them
leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect survive in their home.
on the learning process itself to improve learning
outcomes.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The goal of the lesson is to create a 1-3 min podcast describing the animal, it adaptions, and how it
helps them survive there environment.
Selected Instructional Software Tool:
Spotify for Podcasters
Description of Software:
A host to audio content online to record and upload content.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing

it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:
The tool will be introduced to the students a little before the main activity will be done. This will
let the students become at least slightly acclimated to how to get the work done. Then the lesson
will be implemented once the student show enough proficiency for self-autonomy. There goals
will be aware of their goals at the beginning of the lesson, while also being highlighted and
resources they have on hand. My goal during this lesson is to only help students when it comes to
getting their thoughts onto the audio format. If further scaffolding is needed to help students
acquire information, then it will be done as well. We will wrap up this activity by students sharing
there projects.
Managing student learning: For this lesson I would like for students to create their own time limits with
when certain checkpoints are completed within a set time perimeter. This will hopefully empower the student
in their learning and feel like their time is being used effectively.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
With podcasting tools, while not perfect can implement different support tools such as transcripts or
visual to help support certain students needs. Podcasting implements skills that most students could
use in the future in artistically or through personal work for school.
Reflection:
I feel like this lesson will teach students another avenue to show their thinking and work. This will
maybe also help with students’ advocacy for different forms of assessments outside of paper and
pen. With this lesson I look forward to students hearing and sharing their work with the class. If the
lesson was well implemented the completed product will hopefully provide encouragement of the
students ability to create even with technology.
