Dear Student,

My name is Mrs. Meyers, and I am your English teacher this year. My teaching career began in 2003 at
Homestead Senior High, and this is my sixteenth year at Palmetto Senior. I am pleased to have you in my class,
and I look forward to getting to know you.

I was born in Miami, FL, and I believe this is a city painted with diversity, rich with cultures from around the
world and filled with unique individuals. I have been a Panther for quite a while now, first as a student and now
as a teacher. My memories of my days as a student here at Palmetto remain among some of my most treasured,
from the teachers and friends that I met, to the events I was fortunate enough to experience. I truly believe that
you are attending the best high school in South Florida. As a student, Math and Science were always a challenge
for me, and I found it very difficult to wake up so early in the morning. However, there were certain classes, such
as English, that I enjoyed very much. Becoming involved in school also enhanced my high school experience; I
was a Chatonette and a member of Phi Beta Chi and the National Honor Society. After graduating from
Palmetto, I briefly attended the University of Tampa and earned an Associates degree. Eventually, I moved on to
attend the University of Florida, earning a Bachelor’s degree in English.

Outside of school, I was very involved in Taekwondo. I began when I was nine years old, and I continued until I
went away to college. I was never an athletic child; I was always the last one chosen for team sports in P.E. and,
frequently, I had my feelings hurt. I wore braces on my legs throughout kindergarten and doctors told my
mother that I would never be able to do any kind of physical activity. My mother refused to accept this and
placed me in gymnastics, dance, and, eventually, Taekwondo. Throughout my ten years as a student of Martial
Arts and in my progression through the ranks, I learned many things. I gained the ability to overcome obstacles
and conquer fears, and experienced the feeling of victory that accompanied both.

I did not always want to become a teacher; I did not think "patience was my virtue." After 4 different majors, I
finally chose English; initially, I thought that choosing this major was impractical. What was I going to do with a
degree in English if I did not want to teach? However, I continued taking English classes and enjoying them
more so than any of my other classes. I have always had a passion for literature and writing, and I finally gave in
to my desire to pursue a degree in what I loved rather than in something that would assure me a high-paying job.
It was the best choice that I made throughout my college career. With my new-found major and a year left until
graduation, I still did not know what I wanted to do with my life. I began looking into teaching, and soon, I knew
I needed to be in a classroom.

Along with writing and teaching, I have many other passions. I love to travel. I have been to Brazil, throughout
Europe, and I spent time in Costa Rica. I am a very visual learner, and, to me, the best way to learn about the
history of our world and the various cultures that exist is to actually experience them. I have climbed the Eiffel
Tower in Paris, and I have been mugged at gunpoint in Los Angeles; both experiences have given me stories to
tell. Though it is not far or exotic, my favorite place to visit is Sanibel Island, FL. I cannot recall a summer
memory that does not involve Sanibel, and, therefore, it has become my second home. I also have a great love
for dark chocolate, the beach, films, dancing, eating at new restaurants, cooking and spending time with people I
care about. Books are a central part of my life as well. They entered my life when I was a young child—my
mother would read to me nightly from books such as the Amelia Bedelia series and Where the Wild Things
Are. These nightly readings have continued to this day.

As I mentioned above, I am still very close to my parents and my brother. Though he is a graduate of Florida
State University and is quite a bit taller than l am, he will always be my baby brother. Currently, Will lives in New
Orleans and is practicing accounting at an art gallery. We were both adopted as infants, but when people look at
our family, they tell us how much we look alike, and that simply confirms we are meant to share our lives.
You may often here me speak of 5 very important little people in my life; I have 11-year-old triplets, a 6-year-old
boy and a 4-year-old daughter. They are the center of my life, the brightest lights.

I am anxious to see what this year holds for us, and I look forward to getting to know each of you. I believe I am
a fair teacher, and I expect to be treated with the same respect I give to each of you. If there is something that
bothers you about our class, please do not hesitate to approach me about it. If you are having difficulty with any
of your assignments, please see me and I will be more than happy to spend some extra time with you before or
after school. I believe that asking questions is a sign of intelligence, so at all times (unless someone else is
speaking), ask away! I may lead you to find the answer for yourself because in order to be successful in life it is
essential to think for oneself. At times, you may think I am giving you too much work; it is not meant to torture
you. It is only because I want each of you to reach your maximum level of academic achievement, and I am
certain that with a bit of hard work each of you will do so.

Now that you have learned a bit about me, I invite you to write me back and share a bit about yourself. Your
letter does not have to be as long as mine, and you need only to provide information that you feel comfortable
sharing. The only grade you will receive for this assignment will be for its completion; please submit your typed,
completed letter to Turnitin. I wish all of you a successful year!

Most Sincerely,

Mrs. Meyers
