Measurement of Resistance, Capacitance, Inductance and Resonant Frequencies of RLC Using Oscilloscope

The student measured the resistance, capacitance, and inductance of an RLC circuit using an oscilloscope. Measurements were taken at different frequencies. The resistance was measured to be 3376 Ω, the capacitance was measured to be 0.21 μF, and the inductance was measured to be 0.55 mH. The resonant frequencies of the series and parallel RLC circuits were also determined, being 6446.7 Hz and 6470 Hz respectively. The theoretical resonant frequency calculated from the measured component values was 4683 Hz, agreeing reasonably with the measured results.

I. Purpose of the experiment:

- Understand a typical RLC circuit.
- Learn how to use electrical equipment including oscilloscope and function generator.

II. Experimental results:

1. Resistance measurement:

Trial f (Hz) Rx = R0 (Ω)

1 500 3378
2 1000 3376
3 1500 3374

2. Capacitance measurement:
1
Trial f (Hz) ZC = Z0 (Ω) C x= (F)
2 πf R0
1 1000 159 0.10×10-5
2 2000 79 0.20×10-5
3 3000 49 0.32×10-5

3. Inductance measurement:

R0
Trial f (Hz) ZL = Z0 (Ω) L x= (H )
2 πf
1 10000 35 0.56×10-3
2 20000 69 0.55×10-3
3 30000 100 0.53×10-3

4. Determination of resonant frequency:

fseries of series RLC fparallel of parallel RLC

Trial
circuit (Hz) circuit (Hz)
1 6550 6490
2 6460 6470
3 6330 6450

III. Data treatment:

1. Resistance measurement:
3

∑ Ri
R x = i=1 =3376(Ω)
3

√∑
3
2
(Ri−R x )
i=1
Δ R x =S . D= =0.9(Ω)
3
Hence:

𝑅𝑥 = R x ± Δ𝑅𝑥 = 3376.0 ± 0.9(Ω)

2. Capacitance measurement:
3

∑ Ci
i=1 −5
C x= =0.21×10 (F)
3

3

∑ (Ci−C x)2
i=1 −5
Δ C x =S . D= =0.05 ×10 ( F )
3

2
lOMoARcPSD|16027368

Hence:

C𝑥 = C x ± ΔC𝑥 = (0.21 ± 0.05) × 10-5(F)

3. Inductance measurement:
3

∑ Li
L x = i=1 =0.55 ×10−3 ( H )
3

3

∑ (Li−L x )2
i=1 −3
Δ L x =S . D= =0.01× 10 (H )
3
Hence:

L𝑥 = L x ± ΔL𝑥 = (0.55 ± 0.01) × 10-3(H)

4. Determination of resonant frequency:

a) Series RLC circuit:
3

∑ fi
i=1
f series = =6446.7 (Hz)
3

√∑
3
2
( f i−f series )
i=1
Δ f series = =52.1( Hz)
3
Hence:

f series =f series ± ∆ f series =6446.7 ± 52.1( Hz)

b) Parallel RLC circuit:

3

∑ fi
i=1
f ¿= =6470( Hz)
3

√∑
3
(f i−f ¿ )2
i=1
Δ f ¿= =9.4( Hz)
3
Hence:

f ¿=f ¿ ± ∆ f ¿ =6470.0± 9.4 (Hz)

c) Theoretical result:
Theoretically, we can calculate the resonant frequency of RLC circuit by the formula
1
f 0= . With C = 2.1μF, L = 0.55mH, we have:
2 π √ LC
1
f 0= =4683( Hz)
2 π √ LC
The theoretical result of resonant frequency is roughly equal to the directly measured
results. We can conclude that the RLC circuit (with properly small resistance) becomes a good
approximation to an ideal LC circuit.
