CEP Isolation & Normalisation Procedure

This document provides procedures for isolating and normalizing a condensate extraction pump (CEP) during maintenance at a power plant. The isolation procedure outlines 12 steps for preparing the CEP for maintenance, including electrical isolation, closing valves, and issuing a work permit. The normalization procedure describes 9 steps to restore the CEP to service after maintenance is complete, such as opening valves, checking oil levels, starting trial operation. The document aims to ensure safe isolation and return to service of the CEP.

NTPC/VSTPP OPERATION DEPARTMENT UNIT -

AREA- Turbine REV: 1

CEP Isolation & Normalization Date:05.10.2018
STAGE# 2,3,4 & 5
Procedure

SCOPE: This is applicable to all 500MW unit of VSTPS

S.No. DESCRIPTION REMARKS

CEP ISOLATION PROCEDURE
Ensure that The Pump is in stopped condition.
1
Pump taken out from standby mode. Close the
2
discharge valve & its bypass valve (IBV)
Ensure Electrical isolation:
3 CEP Motor
Discharge MOV including IBV
Close the pump suction valve slowly and
4 observe its suction pressure. Suction pressure
should always be on negative side.
Close pneumatic Re-circulation control valve & its
5 manual isolating valve.
Close discharge vent manual valve & its solenoid
6 valve
7 Close both source of seal water manual valve. Ensure
seal water pressure gauge is showing zero & observe
vacuum (if mechanical sealing arrangements provided,
switch to next step)
8 Close Canister vent manual valve

9 Close the isolating valve of suction line relief valve

10 Open Suction strainer vent valve & Ensure no air is

sucking from it. If air is sucking ,close this vent & tighten
the valve (mention in S.no. 4,5 ,6, & 8 )
Close ECW cooling inlet and outlet valve to CEP thrust
11 bearing oil cooler jacket if required

12 Isolate cooling water supply to motor if required.

13 Issue the permit

CEP NORMALISATION PROCEDURE
Ensure that the pump has been boxed up and all
1 men material removed from the area.
Open ECW cooling inlet and outlet valve to CEP
2 thrust bearing oil cooler jacket. Cooling water
supply valves for Motor cooling to be opened .
Check the oil level in thrust bearing, Motor Top and
3 bottom bearings.
4 Ensure drain & vent of suction strainer are in closed
condition
Open Canister vent manual valve slowly and
5 simultaneously charge the seal water and note
down the seal water pressure in Local panel. (if
mechanical sealing arrangements provided
Observe vacuum while opening Canister vent)
CEP suction pressure to come up to -0.6 to -0.7
ksc (equal to running CEP pumps)
6 Open Suction line Relief manual valve .
Open recirculation isolation manual valve. Pneumatic
re- circulation control valve operation to be checked
7 before starting the CEP. Keep control valve in full open
condition.
Crack open the suction valve and watch if there is any
8 change in running CSP discharge pressure (If there is a
change close the suction valve immediately)
9 Open Discharge vent manual valve & open its solenoid
valve
Restore supply of CEP & its discharge MOV including
10 IBV.

11 Release EPB & Start CEP for trial run
