Slope of A Line

This document provides instructions for a lesson on slope of a line for 8th grade students. The lesson uses an interactive simulation to help students: - Define and illustrate the concept of slope of a line; - Find the slope of a line given two points on its graph; and - Participate actively in a classroom activity to explore slope. The activity guides students through using an interactive simulation to plot points, draw lines between them, and calculate the slopes in different scenarios. It includes questions and worksheets to reinforce understanding of key concepts like increasing, decreasing, zero and undefined slopes.

What is slope of a Line?

The steepness of a hill is called a

slope. The same goes for the
steepness of a line. The slope is
defined as the ratio of the vertical
change between two points, the
rise, to the horizontal change
between the same two points, the
run.

change∈ y ∆ y
Slope= or .
change∈x ∆x
The slope of a line is usually
represented by the letter m. (x1, y1)
represents the first point whereas
(x2, y2) represents the second point.

in your activity sheet, How will you
solve to find the slope of a Line?

Explain

Looking at the points that you plot

earlier, we can clearly say that the
slope of a line shows how steep a
straight line is.

The slope of a line is positive when the

line increases from the left to right.
The slope of a line is negative when
the line decreases from left to right.
The slope of a line is 0 when the
line goes down straight across
horizontally. And the last one is a bit
tricky. It shows us a vertical line,
which means that it results to a
division of zero. You can’t divide
any number by zero. So a straight
up and down vertical line’s slope is
undefined.
We will use the formula of the slope
Again, how to calculate the slope of a

“How steep am I”
Linear Equation and Graph
Name:______________________________________Date: _____________

Grade/Section: _______________________
INTRODUCTION

Why do we need study linear equation? Why is it important to learn in class?

What is the function of a line in our daily life? These are your usual questions when you
are bored with your mathematics teacher discussing linear equation in class.
In this activity, you are given the chance to explore linear equation with the
support of the excellent mathematical software PhET (Physics Education Technology)
Interactive Simulation in graphing lines.
PhET was hosted by Colorado University and has created more than 110 freely
available well-researched interactive simulations for learning physics, mathematics and
other sciences. It provides fun, free, interactive simulation which can be run both online
and offline.
Furthermore, in this activity you will use PhET Interactive Simulation on graphing
lines to find the slope of a line given two points and a graph. Also, with the help of PhET
you can visualize the graph of the slope which is a game-like environment where you
can learn through exploration.

OBJECTIVES
Students must be able to:
 Define and Illustrate the Slope of a Line
 Find the Slope of a Line given two points and it’s graph.
 Participate in class actively.
