Chapter 2: The Process of Play

1. Describe Urie Bronfenbrenner's "ecological theory". How might


this theory connect to play experiences for today's children?

2. Identify the unique features of play (3 features), and 7 common
characteristics of play. What are implications for you in planning
& provisioning for young children's play? (Note the p. #)
3. Name and provide an example for each of the 6 phases in the
play process. (Note the p. #)
4. Create a chart to outline Piaget, Smilansky and Parten's Stages
of Play. Provide everyday examples of these types of play -
what do you expect to observe in child care centres,
kindergartens and before/after school programs?
5. Contemporary theorists have examined play in social contexts -
describe Goncu, Vygotsky, Bronfenbrenner and Critical

6. Describe your role, as an adult, in promoting and participating in
