Research Project - Computer Networks
Overview
In our modern connected world, there are many devices all around us that communicate and signal to one
another across networks, both physical and wireless. Examine the ways in which devices send each other
information, and consider the people and processes that rely on this kind of communication.
Questions
Pick a computing device that communicates with another device across a network.
● What protocol does the device use? How does that protocol work?
● What is the topology of the network this device is on? What other machines does this device need to send
information to or receive information from?
● What factors might cause this communication to fail? What happens if it does?
● How many devices like the one you chose can be supported on this network at once? What are the
advantages/disadvantages of adding more devices to the network?
● Does this network have any additional unique concerns based on its software, hardware, or transmitted
information content? (For example: security, durability, etc.)
Examples
● A smart-home device such as a thermostat or other appliance
● The wifi router in a person’s home
● Power generation and monitoring networks, such as solar panels or power plants
● A modern game controller with sound, light, and tactile output
● A printer that can be controlled from multiple computers in an office
● Remote surgery technology
● A theater tech console for controlling lighting or sound during performances
● The technology used to control a video scoreboard during a sporting event
Requirements
1. Research your chosen subject, using at least three different sources. Your sources should support your
claim, and should be reliable and accurate.
2. Write at least two paragraphs summarizing your findings. Your teacher may have you use the worksheet
provided, or have an alternate way they’d like you to submit your paragraphs. Provide a list of sources you
used as reference, so that readers can visit those sources for more information. Tip: Use an online MLA
citation generator to help create correct citations.
3. Orally present your findings to the class (you may use slides if your teacher recommends them). Your
goal is not only to share what you have learned, but also why it is interesting. You should be prepared to
answer questions from classmates or lead a discussion of the issues or debates around this technology.
Paragraph 1
A computing device that i choose was the wifi router because its able to connect and communicate with other
Devices across networks. The wifi router uses the internet protocol also know as IP which is able to communicate
With other devices. How IP works is that it connects with host through other interfaces which converts data into
Datagrams which consist of metadata. Another device that is needed would be a modem which typically connects
With the router which receives internet access and sends it to other devices. The wifi router is a star topology.
Paragraph 2
Wifi routers can have some trouble though like ways it could fail would be Traffic spikes. If it does
It could result in a hiccup to the system and the data center operation moves on. Most
Routers can typically connect up to 255 devices. The disadvantages though would be single
interface which will prevent routers from operating at their best. Advantages though would be the
In its increase with connectivity. Concerns of could be that the router can cause things like
mismatched wifi security settings or MAC address restrictions. This is the reason why choose my
device.
