EMC 3130 Television Field Production, Fall 2011 Camera Test Instructions FOR ALL SHOTS: Shoot a shoulder

shot of a subject looking off camera to either the right or the left, as in an interview setting. All shots should be consistently framed as a shoulder shot. Subject may be standing or seated. Abide by the rule of thirds, and rules regarding head space and look/eye space when framing the shots. Camera should be eye level with the subject. The subjects face should be properly exposed. Background should be interesting but not too cluttered. There should be depth to the background. Do not put your subject against a close wall. Lighting may be available light but should be flattering and create a sense of depth. Try for an approximation of Rembrandt lighting. Color temperature on the face should be correct by white balancing or by setting the camera to the proper color temperature setting. The subject and the background should be at an acceptable exposure ratio, i.e. neither excessively brighter nor excessively darker than the other. The subject should speak, and you should record sound. It does not matter what the subject is saying. They may count numbers if you like. Each shot should be approximately ten to fifteen second in duration. Each shot must be slated. This can be done with a piece of paper that has the shot number, the focal length of the lens, the camera make and model, and your name written on it. Or it can done in edit. Be sure it is clear and legible to the camera. Shot # 1. Shoulder shot - Shot outside with the widest focal length available on your camera. Shot # 2. Shoulder shot -Same location and background setting as shot # 1. Shot with a medium focal length on your camera. Shot # 3. Shoulder shot - Same location and background setting as shots # 1 and 2. Shot with the longest/most telephoto focal length on your camera. Shot # 4 Shoulder shot - Shot inside with the widest focal length available on your camera. Daytime. A window should be visible somewhere in the background. Shot # 5. Shoulder shot - Same location and background setting as shot # 4. Daytime. Shot with a medium focal length on your camera. Shot # 6. Shoulder shot - Same location and background setting as shots # 4 and 5. Daytime. Shot with the longest/most telephoto focal length on your camera. Feel free to experiment with shutter speed, frame rate, exposure settings, etc. Output your video through Final Cut Pro or whatever other editing system you intend to use. Label the resulting file with your last name followed by first initial followed by underscore followed by CR for Camera Report. Example: BowenE_CR
