Revised Assignment-1 Mechanical Vibrations

The document contains 7 questions regarding mechanical vibrations. Question 1 asks to identify the type of isolator shown in a figure and its characteristics. Question 2 gives parameters for a vibrating system and asks to determine damping factor, natural frequency, logarithmic decrement, ratio of consecutive amplitudes, and number of cycles for amplitude to reduce to 20%. Question 3 asks to determine the natural period of a spring-mass system when a second mass is added. Question 4 asks to find logarithmic decrement and ratio of consecutive amplitudes for a given spring-mass-damper system. Question 5 asks to determine damping coefficient for a given mass-spring-damper system and to calculate amplitude increase when damper is removed. Questions 6 and 7 give additional

MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS

Assignment 1 23/07/2021

Each question carries 5 marks

1. Free vibration of 1 tonne machine mounted on an isolator is shown in Fig.1. Identify the
type of isolator and its characteristics. i.e. the spring.
(i) The damping factor, (ii) Spring stiffness, (iii) damping coefficient (iv) critical
damping coefficient.

Fig 1
2. A vibrating system is defined by the following parameters:
m = 3 kg; k = 100 Nlm; c = 3 N-s/m.
Determine: (a) The damping factor. (b) The natural frequency of damped vibration. (c)
Logarithmic decrement. (d) The ratio of two consecutive amplitudes, and (e) The number
of cycles after which the original amplitude is reduced to 20 percent.

3. A 5 kg mass attached to the lower end of a spring, whose upper end is fixed, vibrates with
a natural period of 0.45 sec. Determine the natural period when a 2.5 kg mass is attached
to the midpoint of the spring with the upper and lower ends fixed.

4. Find the logarithmic decrement and ratio of any consecutive amplitude of a vibrating
system, which consists, of a mass of 3.5 kg, a spring of stiffness 2.5 N/mm and a damper
of damping co-efficient 0.018 N/mm/s.

5. A machine part of mass 2 kg vibrates in a viscous medium. Determine the damping

coefficient when a harmonic exciting force of 25 N results in a resonant amplitude of
12.5mm with a period of 0.2 second. If the system is excited by a harmonic force of
frequency 4 Hz, what will be the percentage increase in the amplitude of vibration when
damper is removed as compared with that with damping.

6. The support of a spring-mass system is vibrating with an amplitude of 5 mm and a

frequency of 1150 cycle/min. If the mass is 0.9 kg and the spring has a stiffness of 1960
N/m, determine the amplitude of vibration of the mass. What amplitude will result if a
damping factor of 0.2 is included in the system?

7. For the system shown in fig. 2, the characteristic of the dashpot is such that when a constant
force of 49 N is applied to the piston, its velocity is found to be 0.12 m/s.

(i) Determine the value of damping coefficient

(ii) (ii) Would you expect the complete system to be periodic or aperiodic?
