Simplex Method

The document describes using the simplex method to solve a linear programming problem to maximize the objective function z = 5x1 + 7x2 subject to constraints. It provides the initial simplex table and goes through two iterations of the method, choosing pivot columns and rows at each step based on minimum ratios. It arrives at a final solution of x1 = 8/5, x2 = 12/5, s3 = 11/5, with the maximum value of z being 124/5.

Simplex Method

Problem 1.2.1
Maximize z = 5x1 + 7x2
Subject to constraints

x1 + x2 ≤ 4
3x1 + 8x2 ≤ 24
10x1 + 7x2 ≤ 35
x1 , x2 ≥ 0

Let slack variables be s1 , s2

x1 + x2 + s1 = 4
3x1 + 8x2 + s2 = 24
10x1 + 7x2 + s3 = 35

The standard linear programming problem is
Maximize z = 5x1 + 7x2 + 0s1 + 0s2 + 0s3

Step 1: Initial simplex table:

cj 5 7 0 0 0
cBj Solution Ratio

zj 0 0 0 0 0
zj − cj −5 −7 0 0 0

In zj − cj (among {−5, −7, 0, 0, 0}), the most negative value is −7. So, x2 is
the pivot column.

Now, divide solution column by x2 column to find Ratio.
In ratio column (among {4, 3, 5}), 3 is the least positive value. So, select s2
row.
