Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A.PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
a. Prayer
Everybody stand and let us pray. Classmates, let us pray…

b. Greetings
Good morning class! Good morning Teacher! Good morning
classmates!

c. Checking of Attendance
Is there any absent today? None, Teacher!
Wow, that’s great!
B. MOTIVATION
Let the students do the following.
Consider the equation, y = 3x + 5. Find y when:
a. x = 1
b. x = 0 a. y = 8
c. x = -4 b. y = 0
c. y = -7
Guided Questions:
a. What variables were involved in the equation?
The variables were involved in the equation
are x and y.
b. Which of the variables has assumed or given values?

The variable that assumed or given values is

x.
c. Which of the variables has a value that depends on the
other variable?
The variable has a value that depends on the
B. PRESENTATION other variable is y.
Sometimes, two variables are related in such a way that the
graph is a straight line. Consider the problem that follows.

The total cost that a plumber charges his clients is

Php 35.00 plus Php 25.00 multiplied by the number of
hours he completed the work.
Let x be the number of hours the plumber work
Let y be the total cost of his work.

Noticed that the plumber’s total cost of work can be written

in the form of the equation,

y = 25x + 35

You should recognize that this relation is a function.

Likewise, this function gives us the following sets of domain
and range.

x 1 2 3 4
y 60 85 110 135

 Asked the students to identify the domain and the

range.

Let us focus on the form of the equation y = 25x + 35. The domain is {(1,2,3,4)}
The range is {(60,85,110,135)}

1. The equation can be stated in terms of y, which

depends on the value of x.

2. If we used letters to represent the coefficient of x and b

as a constant term, then the equation y = mx +
b is a linear function.

3. A linear function is a set of ordered pairs (x,y) that are

related by an equation of the form y = mx + b
Therefore, y is the dependent variable and x
where: is the independent variable.
y = dependent variable
x = independent variable
m = constant coefficient of x
b = constant term
Example:
Function Degree m b
1. y = 5x + 1 1 5 1
2. y = -6x – 7
3. y = 3x
 Allow the students to answer example number 2 and 3.

4. The graph of a linear function is a straight line.

(Asked the student to graph on the board)
Example:
y = 25x + 35
Function Degree m b
1. y = 5x + 1 1 5 1
2. y = -6x – 7 1 -6 -7
3. y = 3x 1 3 0

x 1 2 3 4
y 60 85 110 135

5. The domain of a linear function is the set of the

permissible values of the independent variable.

6. The range of the linear function is the value of the

dependent variable corresponding to all values of the
independent variables in the domain.

 Based from the six statement about the linear function,

we can now solve the given problem using the equation
y = mx + b

Example:
Express each statement in symbols. Determine which
quantities correspond to y, x, m, and bin the equation
y = mx + b
1. The total monthly income of a salesman equals his
fixed salary of Php 12 500.00 plus 10 percent of his
sales.

Solution:
Let y = total monthly income
m = 10 percent
x = sales
b = Php 12 500

Therefore:
y = 0.1x + 12 500

 Let the students answer example number 2.

2. Suppose a waiter receives Php 300.00 per day, plus 20

percent of the tips.

D. APPLICATION

Since you already know what linear function is. I have

here an activity that will enable you to solve problems
involving linear functions by following the steps provided. I
will group you into 5. Each group will be assigned to fill the
flow chart given to complete the steps in solving linear
function.
You own a newly-born German shepherd. Suppose the Solution:
dog weighs 1 kg at birth. You’ve known from your friend that
Let y = total take-home pay
the monthly average weight gained by the dog is 5 kg. If the
rate of increase of dog’s weight every month is constant, m = 20 percent
determine an equation that will describe the dog’s weight.
Predict the dog’s weight after five months using mathematical x = amount of tips
equation and graphical representation. b = Php 300.00

Therefore:
y = 0.2x + 300

Step 5: Identify the constant Step 4: Graph on your own

coefficient of x(m) and constant term the linear function using the
(b) and write the equation of the
linear function. table in Step 3.

Question:

1.How will you predict the dog’s weight given the rate of
change in his weight?

E. GENERALIZATION
1. What is linear function?

2. What is the independent variable?

3. What is the dependent variable?

F. EVALUATION

Direction: Solve the following. Show your solutions.

1. A pay phone service charges Php5 for the first three minutes
and Php 1 for every minute additional or a fraction thereof.
How much will a caller have to pay if his call lasts for 8
minutes? Write a rule that best describes the problem and
draw its graph using any method.

2. A motorist drives at a constant rate of 60 kph. If his

destination is 240 kilometers away from his starting point,
how many hours will it take him to reach the destination?
Write a rule that best describes the problem and draw its
graph using any method.
The constant rate of change can be solved
using the linear function.

3. Jolli Donuts charges Php 18 each for a special doughnut plus

a fixed charge of Php 5 for the box which can hold as many
as 24 donuts. How many doughnuts would be in a box
priced at Php 221? Write a rule that best describes the
problem and draw its graph. In your graph, assume that only
1 to 24 doughnuts are sold.
A linear function is a set of ordered pairs (x,y)
that are related by an equation of the form
y = mx + b
The independent variable is x.

The dependent variable is y.

Answer Key

1. A caller will have to pay Php 10. Let x be

the time that exceeds after 3 minutes and let y
be the charge. The rule is y = x + 5.

2. The formula to be used in solving this

problem is t = d/r or t = 1/r (d), where t is
time, r is rate and d is distance. Given in this
problem are r = 60 kph, which is constant,
and d = 240 kilometers. So, the rule in this
problem is t = 1/60(d). If d = 240 kilometers,
then t = 4 hours.

3. Let x be the number of donuts sold and let

y be the total price. The rule that best
describes the function is y = 18x + 5. It is
assumed that there are 1 to 24 donuts sold;
thus, the domain of the relation is the {x|1 ≤ x
≤ 24}. There would be 12 donuts in the box
whose price is Php 221.
