Activity 3.1 Deductive and Inductive Arguments Direction: Answer The Following As Indicated

The document contains instructions for a multi-part activity assessing deductive and inductive reasoning skills. It asks the student to: 1) use rules of inference to deduce a conclusion from three hypotheses; 2) do the same for a second scenario; 3) make a conjecture about odd integers; 4) make a conjecture based on a number pattern; and 5) provide a counterexample if one can be found for their conjecture.

Activity 3.1 Deductive and Inductive Arguments

Direction: Answer the following as indicated.

1. Use rules of inference to show that the hypotheses “Dennis works hard,” “If Dennis works
hard, then he is a kind boy,” and “If Dennis is a kind boy, then he will get the job” imply the
conclusion “Dennis will get the job.”

2. Use rules of inference to show that the hypotheses “If it does not rain or if it is not cloudy, then
the boat race will be held and the swimming demonstration will go on,” “If the boat race is
held, then the trophy will be awarded,” and “The trophy was not awarded” imply the
conclusion “It rained.”

3. Make a conjecture about the product of two odd integers.

4. Consider the following information below:

32 + 1 = 10
52 + 1 = 26
72 + 1= 50
92 + 1 = 82

Make a possible conjecture of the given information. You can give more than one conjecture.

5. Give a counterexample of your conjecture in no. 4 (if there is any!)
