Lab 9

This document describes a lab experiment to measure voltage, frequency, and time period using an oscilloscope. The lab aims to familiarize students with using an oscilloscope to analyze electrical signals. An oscilloscope displays voltage over time, allowing properties like amplitude, frequency, and rise time to be measured. In the procedure, a function generator is used to generate a sine wave, which is then connected to an oscilloscope. By measuring divisions and time scales on the oscilloscope, the peak-to-peak voltage, frequency, and time period of the sine wave can be calculated.

9 CMS ID:

TO MEASURE THE MAGNITUDE OF VOLTAGE

TIMEPERIOD AND FREQUENCY BY OSCILLOSCOPE
Lab outcomes:
After completing this lab, students will be able to;
 Measure the magnitude of voltage, frequency, and timeperiod by oscilloscope.

Corresponding CLO and PLO:

 CLO-1, PLO-4 (Engineering Knowledge)

Theory:
Oscilloscopes are used to observe the change of an electrical signal over time, such that voltage
and time describe a shape which is continuously graphed against a calibrated scale. The observed
waveform can be analyzed for such properties as amplitude, frequency, rise time, time interval,
distortion and others.
Types of oscilloscope
The main types of oscilloscopes are
• Analog Oscilloscopes
• Digital oscilloscopes

Function Generator: A function generator is usually a piece of electronic test equipment used
to generate different types of electrical waveforms over a wide range of frequencies. Some of the
most common waveforms produced by the function generator are the sine, square, triangular and
saw tooth shapes.

Figure 3Function Generator

Equipment:
 Digital Oscilloscope.
 Probes.
 Function generator.

Procedure:
 First of all, we will connect the positive terminal of the probe with the positive terminal
of the other probe, and the negative terminal is connected with the negative terminal of
the second probe.
 After that connect the other probe to the function generator.
 After that power on the function generator and select the sin wave and select the
frequency. The oscilloscope will show us an alternating signal on the display.
 Now with the help of the number of divisions, volts per division, and the times per
division we will become able to calculate the AC voltage with the help of an
oscilloscope.

Calculations:
Calculating the AC voltage:
Peek-to-peek voltage:
Peek to peek divisions =5.2 divisions
Volts per divisions = 2 v
AC voltage p-p = 5.2 x 2
AC voltage p-p = 10.4 v
Frequency:
Divisions per cycle = 2.1 ms
Time per division = 25 ms
T= Divisions per cycle * Time per division
T= 2.1 x 25 = 52.5
Now by using the frequency formula we get:
F=1/T
F=0.01905 x 10−6 HZ
−3
F=19.05 x 10 HZ

Observations:
In this lab we learned about the functions of oscilloscope and function generator. We were able
to differentiate analogue and digital oscilloscope. A signal was generated with the help of
function generator we used oscilloscope to measure its voltage, frequency and timeperiod.
