Sabong: A Qualitative Study on an Age-old Filipino Gambling Tradition in Baybay,

Leyte

Cockfighting or “Sabong” as the locals would call it, is an age-old Filipino gambling
tradition. This tradition however, did not originate in the Philippines, although experts
believe that the origin of this pastime activity originated somewhere in Southeast Asia.
The tradition’s history dates back to classical Greece wherein it was used as a stimulant
before battle. Nowadays, it is a common Filipino pastime and tradition, although not
unique to the Philippines, the Philippines have made it culturally acceptable as a tradition
to gamble on cockfighting. Cockfighting was first recorded in the Philippines during
Magellan’s Voyage of Discovery of the Philippines, this “old” cockfighting recorded is not
far from modern, Filipino cockfighting, the only difference between modern and old
cockfighting is the amount of supplements that new roosters take. Since cockfighting has
been embraced as a tradition in the Philippines, it remains legal in accordance of the law
however, cockfighting is still considered as gambling and must be regulated at all times,
all cockfighting activities must be held in a registered, licensed venue or else it will be
considered as illegal.
As this research has only begun its venture, we are still unable to observe what
actually goes on inside a cockfighting pit. What we have observed however, is the
limitations that the topic of this study may bring. Cockfighting is not an everyday event,
this will prove to be a challenge as different cockfighting venues have different schedules
and events based on the basic information that we have. Age restriction is one of the
biggest hurdles that we will have to face, as cockfighting, although a tradition, is still
gambling, we as the researchers of this study are minors and thus underaged, getting
inside a cockfighting pit, let alone being able to create a connection with the “Sabong”
Community. With the age-restriction in mind, if we are able to enter the venue, we would
not be able to participate in the gambling itself as minors, as qualitative researchers, we
are limited to observing the activity taking place. Lastly, and most important of all, this will
be a new experience for us researchers as all four us have little to no knowledge on the
principles, rules, and ins-and-outs of cockfighting.
This study will help us to understand what drives people to engage in cockfights
or "sabong". It will also answer why these people still continue to participate despite the
gaming cocks being raised as if they were a social companion or pet. We seek to learn
how “sabong” enthusiasts manifested this maladaptive behavior towards cockfight
gambling, as well as the lived experiences of cockpit gamblers whose concern is to avoid
impairment in their personal lives. This will also include learning about cockfighting rules,
regulations, and how this tradition is properly executed. After all of this, we will look into
the effect of post pandemic on this tradition.
