Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to;
1. illustrates a Normal Distribution;
2. identify characteristics of a Normal Curve; and
3. find percentage of a normal curve.

B. Review (5 minutes)

In the previous module we explained the

concept of random variables, right?
Yes ma’am!
What is the focused of our previous lesson?
It was focused on the discrete random
variable ma’am.
That’s right! What are the things the we
tackled in that area?

We tackled the probability distribution of a
discrete random variable ma’am.

We also learned about the mean, variance
and standard deviation of a probability
distribution were computed through

However, there are data that are continuous.

For today’s lesson we will discover the other

side of random variable, let’s enter into the
wonderful world of continuous random

C. Motivation (3 minutes)

Given the following score distributions of the

students in a mathematics quiz, sketch the
graph of the frequency polygon of each
distribution. Then, answer the questions that
follows.

1. What is the shape of the graph?

Compute the three measures of the graph:
mean, median, mode. What did you
notice?
2. Where did you find measures of the graph? (students answers may vary)
At the center? To the left side of the
graph? Or to the right side of the graph?

D. Discussion (20 minutes)

Data can be described in a variety of ways. It

can be spread out more on the left or more on
the right or even jumbled up. 4 ma’am

what value of mean did you get? The median is also 4 ma’am.

4, okay. How about the median?

 It is also 4 ma’am.
That’s right! And the mode? How many modes
are there?

Alright! Because our data is multi modal. The values are the same ma’am.

So, what did you notice to these 3 values?

Yes! That’s right! And that is one of the

characteristics of a normal distribution.
Let’s take a look at these graphs.

 The third graph is looks like a bell ma’am.

At the center ma’am

The first graph shows that the data are

concentrated to the left while the second
shows that the data are concentrated to the
right. How about the third graph?
It is also found at the center too ma’am!
That’s right! It is looks like a bell, just like what
you found in the activity, in this case where
the data tends to be around a central value
with no bias left or right, and it gets close to a
“Normal Distribution”.

Where can we find the mean?

Very Good! And since the median and mode

are with the value as the mean what can we
conclude?
Yes Klifford!

That’s right! From the sketch of the graph you

did in the activity, the following properties of
the normal probability emerge.

Properties of the Normal Probability

Distribution

1. The distribution curve is bell-shaped.

- Inflection point is the point at which a
change in the direction of curve at
mean minus standard deviation and
mean plus standard deviation.
- Note that each inflection point of the
normal curve is one standard
deviation away from the mean.
2. The curve is symmetrical about its center.
-this means that the curve will have a
balanced proportion when cut I halves
and the area under the curve to the right
of mean (50%) is equal to the area under
the curve to the left of the mean (50%).

3. The mean, the median and the mode are

equal and coincide at the center.
- The mean ( μ ¿ indicates the highest
peak of the curve and is found at the
center.

3. The width of the curve is determined by the

standard deviation of the distribution.

4. The tails of the curve flatten out

 indefinitely along the horizontal axis,
always approaching the axis but never
touching it. That is, the curve is
asymptotic to the base line.

5. The area under the curve is 1. Exactly
half of the values are to the left of the
center and exactly half the values are to
the right.
- Since the mean divides the curve into
halves, 50% of the area is to the right
and 50% to its left having a total of
100% or 1.

6. Every normal curve corresponds to the

“empirical rule” (also called the 68-95-
99.7% rule):
 About 68.3% of the area under
the curve falls within 1 standard
deviation of the mean
 About 95.4% of the area under
the curve falls within 2 standard
deviations of the mean
 About 99.7% of the area under
the curve falls within 3 standard
deviations of the mean.
Consider the example below.
1.Suppose the mean is 60 and the standard
deviation is 5, sketch a normal curve for the
distribution.

Answer:
