The Circulatory System - Grade 7

The circulatory system transports substances around the body via the heart and blood vessels. It includes the heart, which pumps blood through arteries and veins using its left and right chambers. Blood carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones and waste products as it circulates through the body in a double circulatory loop via capillaries. A healthy circulatory system is important for overall health and fitness, while issues like coronary heart disease can cause heart attacks or strokes if blood flow is obstructed.

Why do we need circulatory

system?
Why do we need circulatory system?
➢ Transport substances around the body
➢ Amino acid, glucose, fatty acids and glycerol from digestive system to the cells
➢ Oxygen from the lungs is pumped by the heart to every part of the body
➢ Waste products such as carbon dioxide transported out of the lungs
What does the circulatory system include?
Heart
Structure of the heart

Remember LORD
Left side - oxygenated blood

Right side - deoxygenated blood

Heart
Present between atrium and ventricle

Function of valves - prevent backflow of blood

Measuring pulse
Blood vessels
Arteries
Carry blood away from the heart

Blood moves at high pressure

Blood pushes strongly on thick muscular and elastic walls

This causes a pulse

Veins
Moves blood away from the heart

Blood moves at low pressure

Thin walls

Valves present prevent the backflow of blood

Capillaries
Smallest blood vessel

Only one celled thick

It is close to the cells so that it can supply important substances to the cells and take
away waste products from the cell

Blood
45% of a drop of the blood is made of cells

There are two types of cells in the blood

● Red blood cells

● White blood cells
Red blood cells
Contains haemoglobin to transfer oxygen to parts of the cell

Haemoglobin allows 100 times more oxygen to be transported than water

There are 500 red cells for every white blood cell
White blood cells
● Helps to fight diseases
● They attack bacteria and release chemicals to stop virus infection

Transport of glucose
➔ Glucose is used for respiration
➔ Respiration produces energy
Transport of glucose
➔ Glucose absorbed from the wall of small intestine
➔ Stays in blood plasma
➔ Brings it to the heart
➔ Enters right side of the heart
➔ Picks oxygen and goes to the left side of the heart
➔ Through aorta is supplied to parts of the body
Transport of carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide is a product of aerobic respiration
Transport of carbon dioxide
● Leaves the cells from where it is produced
● It passes through the walls of the capillaries
● Carbon dioxide stays in blood plasma
● It travels along the veins which takes it back to right side of the heart
● It travels through pulmonary artery to the lungs
● Escapes from the capillaries into the walls of the alveoli
● Finally exhaled out of the body
A healthy heart
➢ Healthy heart beats 2500 million times
➢ It’s function is to push blood around 100 000 km
➢ Push of the blood creates blood pressure
➢ Walls of arteries are elastic and stretch and contract with the blood pressure
➢ As the body ages the artery walls become less elastic
Coronary heart disease
● Fatty substances such as cholesterol deposit along with calcium
● Lead to high pressure
● Platelets settle on the atheroma
● Blood clot causes thrombosis
Thrombosis
Thrombosis in the heart causes heart attack

Thrombosis in the brain causes stroke

Exercise keeps you fit
● Improves strength
● Makes body flexible
● Increase endurance
Different activities need different levels of fitness

Need to build up an exercise routine
