Performing A Modal Transient Response Part II
Performing A Modal Transient Response Part II
1. Introduction
The model shown in Figure 1 is a 1in. by 10in. plate with a thickness of 0.1in.
The beam is constructed of a generic material, Young’s Modulus (E) of 1.03E+7, Poison’s ratio (nu) of
0.33, Mass Density of 0.00026, and a Damping, 2C/Co of 0.1.
Import the modal2.nas file that you saved from the modal example. This will have the correct meshed
geometry as well as the functions we will use in this problem. However, the material will need to be
updated to include damping. To do so click on Modify – Edit – Material…. Pick Select All then click
OK. In the Damping, 2C/Co field enter 0.1. Click OK.
Select Model – Load – Dynamic Analysis. In the Create or Activate Load Set window enter
Transient_Loading for the Title. Click on the Modal Transient radio button and enter 100 for the
Number of Steps. Enter 4e-4 for the Time per Step box and enter 1 for the Output Interval. Under
Equivalent Viscous Damping select 3..Modal Damping under the Modal Damping Table. Your
window should appear like the one in Figure 2.

Figure 2. Load Set Options for Dynamic Analysis
Click on Advanced. Enter Coupled for the Mass Formulation. Click OK. Click OK.
From the FEMAP main menu, select Model – Analysis. Click on the New button. Give it a Title and
select 31..NE/Nastran for the Analysis Program. Select 3..Transient Dynamic/Time History as the
Analysis type. Click on the Next button twice and in the NASTRAN Bulk Data Options, click on the All
Plates as QUADR/TRIAR box. Click Next. In the NASTRAN Dynamic Analysis window click on the
Modal Solution Type. In the Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors area type 20 under Number Desired and
click Next four times. In the Output Requests window make sure the Displacement, Velocity,
Acceleration, and Stress boxes are checked. The window should look like the one in Figure 3.

Finally, click on the OK button. You should now be back in the Analysis Set Manager. Click on the
Analysis button and type in a name for the .NAS file and click Write. Once the analysis is complete
click Continue in the NASTRAN Termination Status dialog box. This will write the results data to
FEMAP and close the NE/Nastran Editor.
The results of a modal transient response are best viewed using XY plots. To set one up, press F5
(shortcut for View – Select…). Select XY vs Set Value, and then click on the XY Data button. In the
Select XY Curve Data window, select 1..STEP 1, TIME=0.000E+00 under output set. Under Output
Vector select 3.. T2 Acceleration. Under Output Location enter 64 (this is the node where the load
was applied). Click OK and then click OK again. In the Show Outputs box enter 2 in the From box and
102 in the To box. Click on the Curve 2 radio button and fill in everything like the other curve except
change the Output Location to Node 24.

Figure 4. Curve Data
An XY Plot should now appear that shows the T2 acceleration of node 24 and 64. Your graph should
appear like the one in Figure 5.

The graph results are as we would expect, the tip of the beam undergoes large vibrations during the
enforced acceleration, and after the loading stops the beam vibrates with decreasing magnitude as time
goes by, due to the 5% critical damping. You can view other nodes by pressing F5 again and clicking on
the XY Data button and entering a different node number in Output Location.
You can also view an animation of the actual deformation of the plate. First, you must resize the window
so your graphics card does not run out of memory. Grab the corner of the main window and reduce it by
approximately 50%. Next press F5 (shortcut for View – Select…). Select the Animate-MultiSet under
Deform Style. Click on Deform and Contour Data…. For the Output Set select 1..STEP 1,
TIME=0.000E+00. Select Total Translation for Deformation and 7033..SHELL VON MISES-2 for
Contour Output Vectors. Under Final Output Set select 101..STEP 101, TIME=4.000E-02. Click OK,
and OK again, the animation should now begin showing the deformation of the beam.
