INTRODUCTION

Surveying is a professional work that includes professional individuals known


as surveyors. However, surveying profession is not easily recognized by many
in public. Therefore, non-government organisation such as RISM and FIG aim
to increased surveyor’s reputation and to be more acknowledged by the public.
ROYAL INSTITUTION OF SURVEYORS
MALAYSIA (RISM)

HISTORY

There were initially two professional bodies representing surveyors, The Malayan Institution of
Surveyors and the Institution of Land Surveyors. But on March 13, 1961 these two bodies met at the
Boardroom of Royal Selangor Club and resolved to form The Institution of Surveyors. On June 19,
1966, the name of the institution was changed to the Institution of Surveyors, Malaysia.

Royal Status

His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor, conferred the royal status to the Institution of Surveyors
Malaysia (ISM) on 28th March 2011. Subsequently, the former name was changed to Royal Institution
of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM).
FUNCTION

The function of RISM is for the public to recognize the surveyor’s profession that implies discipline,
innovation work and to provide comprehensive services towards the public. The institution also helps
to elevate surveyors’ reputation and to consistently stay relevant to the public.

OBJECTIVE OF ESTABLISHMENT

To continuously improve its standard of professional practices and working ethics as well as to
promote successful projects and the development of the RISM members.

VISION

To be recognized as an innovative and dynamic world-class professional surveying institution

To provide quality, value added and comprehensive services

To be centre of excellence in surveying

MISSION

To continuously improve the standards of professional practice and ethics

To promote the welfare and professional development of members

To expand by incorporating related disciplines into our profession

SURVEYORS (FIG)

HISTORY
FIG is an international organization representing the interests of surveyors worldwide. It is a
federation of national member associations and covers the whole range of professional fields within
global surveying, geomatics, geodesy and geo-information community.

Was founded on July 18, 1878 in Paris by delegates from seven national associations – Belgium,
France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. It was widely known as the Federation
Internationale des Geometres and later became International Federation of Surveyors. It is also a UN-
recognized non-government organization (NGO), representing more than 120 countries around the
world.

FUNCTION

It provides an international forum for discussion and development aiming to promote


professional practice and standards.

OBJECTIVE OF ESTABLISHMENT
FIG aims surveyors to act in modern profession to build a better infrastructure for the society and
continue to improve its top-tier reputation that represents the interests of surveyors worldwide.

THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF SURVEYORS (FIG) MEMBERS

The International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) is an organisation that consists of two tiers of
honorary members in addition to member associations, affiliates, academic members, and businesses.
115 nations are represented by various membership categories in FIG. 

MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS

- National organisations that represent one or more surveying fields. There are 96 member
associations from 81 nations as of October 2022.

ACADEMIC MEMBERS

- Organisations, institutions, or agencies that support research or instruction in one or more surveying
disciplines In October 2022, there are 79 academic members

AFFILIATE MEMBERS

- Groups or organisations conducting surveys professionally yet without meeting the requirements for
member associations. In September 2021, there are 43 affiliate members from 41 nations.

CORPORATE MEMBERS

- Organisations, institutes, or agencies that offer paid services associated with the surveying
industry. In October 2022, they will be 20 corporate members.

CORRESPONDENTS

-In a nation where there is no association or group of surveyors suitable to join FIG as a
member association or affiliate, a person may be chosen as correspondent. In October 2022,
there are 5 correspondents.
THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF SURVEYORS (FIG) SERVICES

The International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) provides an international forum discussion and
development aiming to promote professional practice and standards. In order to implement a
sustainable development plan and deliver functional solutions in a complex and fast changing world
that cannot wait, FIG promotes the role of surveyors as a lucrative and sustainable profession. FIG
encourages its members to work together internationally to advance surveying in all of its uses. As the
foremost international non-governmental organisation on geospatial information and the management
of land, water and the built environment, FIG works closely with appropriate United Nations
authorities, the World Bank, and its sister groups. The duty of surveyors includes calculating the size
and shape of the planet, mapping its surface, and managing it sustainably.

Finally, by the completion of this assignment, we will be able to describe


numerous facts regarding the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia and The
International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) (RISM). We will have a deeper
understanding of each organization's role, goal, history, vision, services, and
members as a result of this research. Additionally, there were numerous
advantages for individuals who practise in professional surveying institutions to
learn more about this field.
