• Preparation must be done in advance:
Reading the case study
Assignment of individual options A, B, C, D or E in your groups
Preparatory work on the modelling techniques

• To address general queries about the modelling techniques required for

the assignment

From the Coursework Brief I

Coursework Brief - September 2022
Aim
The purpose of this coursework is to provide you with an opportunity to engage with various IS modelling techniques which will be
taught in the module. The criteria for marking will be made available in Blackboard and discussed in practical and tutorial sessions
and the discussion boards.
Assessment Instructions
The assessment is split into two components. To complete the assessment, you will be grouped into teams of 4 to 5 students.
Each group will represent a team of consultants and will be given the task of carrying out a thorough systems analysis of the
existing business processes and systems of ElYee Enterprises presented in the case study documents. Your work will determine
weaknesses and potential areas for improvement which will lead to the requirements and high-level design for a new information
systems solution.
You will be provided with a case study description. The case study represents the outcomes of an initial investigation of the
information- and data-related issues and challenges facing the organisation. Your brief is to use the case study material to carry
out your systems analysis. This analysis will result in a set of separate deliverables as outlined below. Base your analysis on the
information that is available to you. There is no totally 'right' answer to this exercise, although there are clearly some wrong
answers.

From the Coursework Brief II

The second component (Individual Report) is an individual effort where each member of the
group develops an analysis based on three of four systems development approaches that are
presented in the module (RUP, SSADM, Object Oriented Analysis & Design, Agile
Methodologies), together with a set of requirements for the new information system and
design elements for that new information system. Each group member must choose their
systems development approaches for this component from one of the options given below
(A, B, C, D or E) in Table 1. While this is an individual effort, groups can continue to meet and
discuss their solutions and compare and contrast their ideas. They should also ensure that
each group member’s submission is their own original work and differentiated from the
other group members. The report must be submitted by 10.00 am, Thursday 15th December
2022.

The Individual Report…

• Will bring together all of the modelling topics that you cover in
weeks 4, 7, 8 and 9
• Allows students to demonstrate their knowledge of modelling
at these levels:
• Business
• System
• Software

Types of IS modelling
• Business models – Representation of a business/enterprise

Types of IS models

system
• Software models – Representation of the software in an information system

The Individual Report

• Allows students to practice techniques relevant to the dominant
information systems development methodologies:
• Rational Unified Process (RUP)
BPMN (Week 4)
• Object Oriented Analysis and Design
UML Use Cases, UML Class Diagrams (Week 7)
• Structured Systems Analysis and Design Method (SSADM)
DFDs (Week 8)
• Agile Methods
Personas, User Stories, Acceptance Criteria (Week 9)

What is the process?

1. Each member of the group must choose ONE unique option from A, B, C ,D or E
2. Group members discuss among themselves which member of the group will take which
option
3. The group members decide and split up the options within the group
4. Group members then work separately on the modelling techniques in their chosen options
5. Group members may keep discussing their solutions and sharing solutions with team
members in their own groups as a means of peer support
6. Groups attend the Individual Report tutorial session in Week 10 for additional support
7. Each group member then individually submits their own individual report on the
submission date
