Characteristics of DC Series Generator: Experiment # 16

The document describes building a Simulink model of a DC series generator. It includes: 1) Opening Simulink in MATLAB and creating a new model window. 2) Adding components like a DC machine, constant load, voltage measurements, and scope to the model. 3) Configuring parameters of the DC machine like speed and connecting the components. 4) Running the simulation and observing that the output voltage is negative, which is due to there being no pre-existing magnetic flux in the ideal MATLAB model.

EXPERIMENT # 16

Characteristics of DC Series Generator

1.0 Objectives

The objective of this lab is to introduce students to the Simulink environment and
enable them to perform basic operations related to Simulink.

2.0 Learning Outcomes

i. Observe the Output and Input of Dc Series Generator with Matlab Simulink
Environment.

3.0 Software

• MATLAB Simulink

4.0 Introduction
There are generally three most important characteristics of series wound DC generator
which show the relation between various quantities such as series field current or
excitation current, generated voltage, terminal voltage and load current.
5.0 Starting up Simulink

In order to use Simulink, you must first start MATLAB. With MATLAB running,
there are two ways to start Simulink:
1-Click on New (+ icon) then from the drop down menu click on Simulink Model as
shown in the picture.
2-Type ‘simulink’ at the MATLAB prompt followed by a carriage return (press the Enter
key)

Next, select New Model from the File pull-down menu in the Library Browser.
The following blank window appears on your screen. We will refer to this window
as the model window.

Task-1
Building a Simulink Model for DC Series Generator

Building a Simulink model of a system consists of selecting the appropriate blocks and
connecting them in a way that represents the mathematical models. Since the best way
to learn a simulation tool is to work with it, this first tutorial will guide you through a simple
example. We will build the block diagram for a simple model consisting of a sinusoidal
input multiplied by a constant gain, which is depicted below.

6.0 Procedure
Following are the steps to draw the desire model on the DC Series Motor

1. In search bar, type the desired component and drag it into the model as shown in
figure below:
One bye One Search All Components and select it,

i. DC Machine
ii. Constant Load

iii. Select DC Voltage Measurment

iv. Select The Scope To Observe The Output Waves of DC Series Generator
Parameters

v. Select The Ground

vi. Select the Voltage Measurement for Observe Output

vii. Select the Powergull

viii. Select DEMUX

ix. Select The Display to Check the Output Voltage

x. Select The RLC Branch Load

1. Use method and draw the DC Series Machine model by using simulink tools .

2. Now Select Parameter of DC Machine

3. Now “Run” the simulation, clicking on the icon as shown into the figure below:
Circuit With Output Values

➢ Speed
1750 rpm
➢ Armature Voltage
-3.88 e-0.7
➢ Armature Current & Field Current
3.88 e-08

• Observation and Conclusion ( Why Voltage Is Not Generated )

The starting voltage in a DC series generator is generated by the residual

magnetism, which is actually saved in the series winding. But there is an ideal
case in the mat lab because of which there is no pre-existing magnetic flux in
the field due to which the field winding does not get voltage to be Excitation.
That is why we are getting the value of voltage in negative .
