Week 7 College Algebra Assignment

The document contains 3 problems utilizing concepts from a unit on trigonometry: 1) Calculating the length of an arc subtended by a central angle of 50 degrees in a circle with radius 10 cm (answer: 8.727 cm). 2) Graphing the function f(x) = xsinx on an interval and describing how it varies from sinx (it has increasing maximums and minimums as x increases). 3) Using sine to calculate the height a 23-ft ladder reaches up a building given the ladder leans at an 80 degree angle (answer: 22.7 ft).

Complete the following questions utilizing the concepts introduced in this unit.

1. Find the length of an arc in a circle of radius 10 centimeters subtended by the central
angle of 50°. Show your work.

𝑟 = 10𝑐𝑚

𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 𝑏𝑒; 𝑥 = 500

𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐴𝑟𝑐, 𝑠 = 𝑟𝑥

𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 500 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑠;

50
𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑠 = .𝜋
180

5𝜋
= 18

5𝜋
𝑠 = 10 . 18

25𝜋
𝑠= 𝑐𝑚
9

𝑠 = 8.727𝑐𝑚 ; The length of the arc is 8.727𝑐𝑚

2. Graph on [-4π, 4π] and verbalize how the graph varies from the
graphs of .

Graph on the window [−5π, 5π] and describe freely what the graph shows.
You can use www.desmos.com/calculator to obtain the graphs.

The Graph of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥;

Looking at the graph, first, the behavior of the function sin(x), near the points where sin(x) = 1
and sin(x) = -1, since these are the maximum and minimum values of sin(x) respectively and the
amplitude is constant for sin(x).

However, when sin x is multiplied by the value of x, the maximums and minimums increase as
the function moves away from the origin. For the given interval, {−4𝜋 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 4𝜋}, the function
5𝜋 7𝜋
has a maximum at 𝑓(𝑥) = 2 . It has minimum at 𝑓(𝑥) = − 2 .

The function f(x) is a periodic function with period 2π. This means that the graph of f(x) will
repeat every 2π units.

𝑥

𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥
The function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 has a maximum amplitude at f(x) = 1, then it keeps on receding both
ends towards -5π, and as well as towards 5π.

3. A 23-ft ladder leans against a building so that the angle between the ground and the ladder is
80°. How high does the ladder reach up the side of the building? Show the steps of your
reasoning.

From the sketch drawing on the right,

Using sine quotient.

𝑂𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
𝑠𝑖𝑛 800 = 𝐻𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒

ℎ 23 ft
𝑠𝑖𝑛 800 = 23 h ft

ℎ = 23 ∗ 𝑠𝑖𝑛 800

ℎ = 22.7 𝑓𝑡

The ladder is approximately 22.7 ft high up the building.
