Written Assignment Unit 1 - Math 1201

This document contains a written assignment with 3 problems about domains of functions. Problem 1 asks the student to find the domain of a rational function in interval notation. Problem 2 discusses plotting pieces of a piecewise function. Problem 3 asks the student to a) find the fixed cost, b) calculate the cost of producing 25 items, and c) determine the domain based on the maximum cost. The document provides context and examples to help the student understand how to solve these domain problems.

f(x)= x−4/x−6

If we take the numerator, There is no limitation in the numerator for x60. It can be greater than

zero. Interval notation should therefore be [6,∞).

Key Item to note: Note: It appears that the denominator is x4 0. In order to prevent

indeterminate form, the denominator must not be zero. Consequently, domain shouldn't

contain 4.

We can plot the various pieces of the function independently and join them to create a

graph of a piecewise function. For instance:

Take the piecewise function into consideration:

f(x) =

3x - 2 for -1 <= x <= 1

5x^2 + 2 for 1 < x <= 3

The domain is represented by the interval [-1, 3]. Plotting the two sections individually and

connecting them at the breakpoint x = 1 will yield the piecewise function's graph.

a.

Fixed cost is the price of producing nothing. Plugging x = 0 into the cost function yields the

answer: C(0) = 10(0) + 500 = 500.

The fixed cost is therefore 500.

b.

By entering x = 25 into the cost function, you can determine how much it costs to produce

25 items:

C(25) = 10(25) + 500 = 2500

Thus, the price to produce 25 pieces is 2500.

c.

The most you can spend is 1500. Set C(x) = 1500 and use the following equations to get the

value of x that corresponds to this maximum cost: 1500 = 10x + 500 1000 = 10x x = 100

Therefore, x >= 100 defines the cost function's domain. The cost function's range is

[1500, ]. The interval notation for the domain is [100, ∞).
