Tutorial 5

This document contains 4 tutorial problems on diodes and diode circuits. Problem 1 involves determining the values of IS and n for a diode based on two given current-voltage data points. Problem 2 involves analyzing the current and voltage in a circuit with an LED. Problem 3 uses an ideal diode model to analyze a circuit with two diodes. Problem 4 determines the maximum resistance value for a voltage regulator and the maximum power dissipation in the resistor to maintain a constant load voltage over varying source and load conditions.

 Problem 1 :
 vD 
A diode operates in forward bias and is described by: i D  I s exp  for v D  VT , with
 nVT 
VT = 0.026V. For VD1 = 0.600V, the current is iD1 = 1mA. For VD2=0.680V, the current is
iD2=10mA. Determine the values of IS and n.

 Problem 2:

Determine the values of i and v in the following circuit. The diode is the LED having the
characteristic shown in the following figure.

 Problem 3

Use the ideal-diode model to analyze the following circuit (Assume the status of D1 and D2).

 Problem 4 :

Consider the voltage regulator shown in the following figure. The source voltage Vs varies
from 10 to 14V, and the load current iL varies from 50 to 100 mA. Assume that the Zener
diode is ideal. Determine the largest value allowed for the resistance Rs so that the load
voltage vL remains constant with variations in load current and source voltage. Determine the
maximum power dissipation in Rs.
