Amit is back from Nepal from a one-day business trip. He breezes through the immigration by just putting his Super Smart Multi-Application Card in the customs reader and getting his stored fingerprint verified against the live one taken at the immigration gate biometrics reader. All his passport details etc. is taken from the card.

Super Smart Multi-Application Card This card is the lifeline of Amit now-a-days. He is not aware of the card technicalities as such. However, the card… Pertains to minimum specification of SCOSTA guidelines of India for smart card based transport application on a 4Kb contact microprocessor chip. However, being a minimum specifications, it has been suitably upgraded to a combi-card (contact and contactless) on a 8Kb contact memory platform with e-Payment applications enabled on the additional memory This is one face of the card
capacity supporting other standards like For Amit all this is not crucial as we’ll see… EMV etc.

Early Morning at Home
Amit is late. The late arrival yesterday deprived him of
the pleasure of a relaxed morning.
Gotta rush to office.
Rushing to Work Oops… telephone bill pending to be paid and so is the electricity bill…wife gives an ultimatum on some groceries too… urgent… urgent… phew!!!
Amit stays at Noida and works at Delhi. Office is at
Connaught Place. The DND Flyway toll road is a life saver for him today. He has to drive and made sure that he has his driving license (DL). This is a super smart multi-application card.

VSAT Networking: ATM
There is a huge queue at the CASH line of
the toll plaza. Quickly Amit takes the smart payment fast lane and pays through the contactless application on his multi- application card, a “stored value card” pre- loaded with money value issued by bank and acceptable to the tolling company. • This he had loaded from his savings account using a Bank ATM terminal quite many days ago through the contact chip part of his card. • The transaction zips through from his card to the server on the toll plaza and moves on to the clearing house.
Whew!! Office can still be reached in time

Leased Line Networking
Oh no!!!!!! Bang after the end of the DND Flyway there is a major traffic snarl up. Quickly Amit decides to park his car at the multi-storied parking lot and avail the metro rail services to be still on time to office.
The payment is again made by the Smart
DL card but now for a different operator. Again the payment zips through to the clearinghouse gateway and the parking lot company gets the payment from the bank..all transparent to Amit. Multi- application in play. e-Banking/e-Payment in some form?

Fiber Cables?
Aaahhhh…the comfort of metro rail travel.. The Metro train ride was paid for using the same card. Amit realized that his money value was running low. He’ll have to recharge the card from his account with his bankers.
Small problem: Wish the guy next to him
did not smell so badly….
Internet Network: Net Banking
By-the-way the rush in the morning made sure that he has left the lunch at home! Bad scene…anyway the fast food restaurant below the office accepts debit card. The amount goes out from his account instantly.
And speaking about debit cards
and bank accounts…he needs to log on to the net to see if his salary has been credited to his account or not. The smart card allows him a secure login medium for the net banking too.

GSM Network: Mobile Banking
Oh yeah…the groceries have to be tackled but cash in pocket is quite low. Amit needs to definitely load the money in his Smart DL payment card. A quick insertion into his dual slot phone “reads” his balance as Rs.100/- Hmmm… recharge is needed since the grocer doesn’t accept credit or debit cards yet. A transfer of money is possible from his credit or debit card into the Smart DL card through the same mobile phone by logging into his account in a secure way through the phone call. He just calls up the grocer & gives his list of things telling him that he will pick up the bag on his way home Embossed Credit card. This is NOT a SIM card

Office over…back to the multi-level
car park…smooth drive home…but what happened to the phone & electricity bill payments??!! Quickly Amit digs out his card again, stops at a fuel pump and effects the payments from the card again. He picks up loyalty points for the same too.
