Design of Compact Multi-Band EBG Structures

The document describes the design of compact multi-band electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures. Several novel EBG cell designs are presented that can provide multiple bandgaps and reduce the size of EBG structures for a fixed periodicity. This is achieved by utilizing spiral or S-shaped corrugated arms connected to a small square metal patch. The distance between the S-shaped strips is varied in a log-periodic fashion to broaden the stopband and adjust the ratios of center frequencies for multi-band operation. The parameters of the EBG cells are analyzed to understand their effects on the width of the stopbands. The proposed EBG structures could potentially be used for multi-frequency antennas and low frequency antennas.

The log periodic structure is shown in Figure 2. For S-shape or spiral armed corrugated EBG structure,
its first resonant stopband will be reduced because of
increasing the inductance. At the same time, the
centre-frequencies of the multiple stopbands can be
tuned by changing the ratio of the log period. In
comparison to the conventional square metal EBG
structure, the proposed EBG structure can provide
wideband and multiple stopband characteristcs. The
effects of various parameters for the proposed EBG
structure are simulated and studied below:
