METHOD STATEMENT Machintosh Probe

This document outlines procedures for performing Mackintosh Probes Tests to determine subsurface soil conditions. The test involves driving a cone-tipped rod into the ground using a 4.5kg hammer dropped from 30cm. The number of blows required for every 300mm of penetration is recorded. Tests are done until 400 blows are recorded within 300mm, or to a depth of 15m. For pond testing, the equipment is mounted on a floating platform and lowered through water until contacting sediment or the pond bottom. Soil layers and densities are estimated based on blow counts.

METHOD STATEMENT

IN-SITU TEST
MACKINTOSH PROBES TEST

1. Scope
This method statement outlines the procedure for performing a Mackintosh Probe Test on ground, also
inside the pond (if any). The result obtained from the test provides a rough estimation of the soil layer
at a point.

2. Objective
The primary purpose of performing Mackintosh Probes Test will be one of the following:
i. To determine allowable soil bearing capacity of the ground
ii. To determines the density and subsurface conditions.

3. Instrument and Equipment

 The geometry of Mackintosh probe pointer is 25mm diameter and 30° cones, The rods are 13mm
in diameter and usually 1.2m in length. The hammer has a total weight of 4.5kg with a fixed
falling height of 30cm along a guide rod. The coupling is 24mm in outer diameter. Figure MP-I
shows the comparison between J.K.R. and
 Measuring tape
 Puller
 Floating platform or boat (if necessary)

4. Test Procedure
(On Ground)
i. The rods(1.2m long and 12mm diameter) and driven hammer with approximately 4.50 kg are joint
using the rod coupling
ii. Joint the driving point 60 ̊ cone and screw into the lower rods
iii. Iron rod using for mackintosh probe should be marked every 0.30 meter per marking before
starting the test.
iv. The 4kg hammer driven freely with the full drop height available from hammer onto the profile.
v. The number of blow required for every 300mm penetration recorded.
vi. The probing to be terminated when the blows counts of 400 (refusal) recorded over a penetration
of 300mm or less
vii. If the maximum 400 blows not reached for the requirement, the test should be carried on until the
depth of 15.0 meter.

(Inside The Pond (if Any))

Floating platform / small pontoon will be used.
i. Surveyor will peg out the alignment of the point at both ends of the pond as a guideline based on
the proposed location by the engineer,
ii. One (1) rope will be tied up at both ends, MP points will be mark on the rope.
iii. The rods(1.2m long and 12mm diameter) and driven hammer with approximately 4.50 kg are
joint using the rod coupling
iv. Joint the driving point 60 ̊ cone and screw into the lower rods
v. Lower the Mackintosh Probe into the water, and ensure that the weigh attached is free to move.
vi. Move the Mackintosh Probe down through the pond water until it contacts with the sediment or
reach at the base of the pond.
vii. Total length of rods from surface of water to the base of pond will be recorded.
viii. Iron rod using for mackintosh probe should be marked every 0.30 meter per marking before
starting the test.
ix. The 4kg hammer driven freely with the full drop height available from hammer onto the profile.
x. The number of blow required for every 300mm penetration recorded.
xi. The probing to be terminated when the blows counts of 400 (refusal) recorded over a penetration
of 300mm or less
xii. If the maximum 400 blows not reached for the requirement, the test should be carried on until the
depth of 15.0 met
