Revision: Set (4)
Section A [45 marks]
Answer all questions in this section.
1. Calls received by a car rescue service occur independently and at a constant average rate of 3
per minute.
(a) Find the probability that, in a randomly chosen period of 4 minutes, the number of calls
received by the service is exactly 14. [3 marks ]
(b) Show that the longest period of time, in seconds to the nearest 0.1 s, for which the
probability that no calls are received by the service is greater than 0.2 is 32.2 seconds.[4 marks]

2. In a town, 30% of residents listen to the local radio station. Four residents are chosen at random.
(a) State the distribution of the random variable X, the number of these four residents that
listen to local radio.
[2 marks]
(b) On graph paper, draw the probability distribution of X. [3 marks]
(c) Write down the most likely number of these four residents that listen to the local radio
station. [1 marks]
(d) Find E(X) and Var (X). [3 marks]

3. The three independent random variables A, B and C each has a continuous uniform distribution
over the interval [0, 5] with the following probability density function ,
1
,0 ≤ x ≤ 5
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = { 5
0 , otherwise
(a) Find P(A > 3). [1 marks]
(b) Find the probability that A, B and C are all greater than 3. [2 marks]
The random variable Y represents the maximum value of A, B and C.
The cumulative distribution function of Y is
 0, y0

 1, y5

(c) Find the probability density function of Y. [2 marks]
(d) Sketch the probability density function of Y. [2 marks]

4. In an outbreak of a skin rash caused by a virus, sufferers were categorized by the approximate
percentage of skin area affected. The results were
% of skin area affected 05 5  10 10  15 15  20 20  25 25  30
Frequency 16 23 19 12 7 3
(a) Calculate unbiased estimates of the mean and variance of percentage of skin area affected.
[3 marks]
(b) Find a 95% confidence interval for the mean percentage of skin area on the
sufferers of this rash that was affected. [4 marks]
2

5. The proportion of car drivers taking leadfree petrol at a particular filling station has been found
to be 42%. Following an increase in the tax on other types of fuel, a random sample of 120 cars was
observed at the filling station. The number of drivers taking leadfree petrol was found to be 58.
Test, at the 5% level, whether there has been an increase in the proportion of drivers taking leadfree
petrol at the filling station. [6 marks]

6. At a fruit packing warehouse samples of five strawberries are selected at various times during
the day. The number of rotten strawberries in each sample is given in the table.
Number of rotten strawberries 0 1 2 3 4 5
frequency 18 27 16 9 6 4
Test at the 5% level of significance , whether or not the binomial distribution with
parameters n = 5 and p = 0.3 is an adequate model for these data. [9 marks]

Section B [15 marks]

Answer only one question in this section.
7. The following data shows the masses, in gm of mangoes harvested in a particular day.

32 33 34 35 37 40 48 48 49 52
52 52 54 57 59 61 61 62 64 77
79 80 86 99

(a) Construct a stem plot using the data above. [3 marks ]

(b) Find the mean and standard deviation of the masses of the mangoes. [3 marks ]
(c) Find the median and semi –inter quartile range of the masses of the mangoes.[4 marks]
(d) Draw a box plot to represent the data and identify possible outliers. Comment on the
shape of the distribution and give a reason for your answer. [5 marks]

8. (a) A farm manager wish to estimate the damage to Agar (Aquilaria) tress of his
plantations due to flooding and pests.
(i) According to previous record, the standard deviation of the number of damaged trees is
245. Calculate the number of trees required so that he is 99% confident that the estimate is
within 100 trees of the true mean. [3 marks]
(ii) The standard deviation of the number of damaged tree is actually 356 . Based on the
sample size obtained in (i), determine the symmetrical confidence level for the estimate to
be within 100 trees of the true mean. [4 marks]
(b) A large chain of telecommunication service provider introduces a training programme
for counter staff to increase their productivity and morale. The time for collecting customers’
phone-bill payment measured in seconds is approximately normal.
The management believes that the mean time for collecting customers’ phone-bill payment should
be 120 seconds. After the training programme, the times to collect 90 bills are found to have a
mean of 113.5 seconds and a standard deviation of 35 seconds.
(i) Calculate the unbiased estimate of the variance of the time for collecting customers’
phone-bill payment. [1 mark]
(ii) Determine , at the 5% significance level, whether , after the training programme, the
mean time to collect a bill has improved. [7 marks]
