DESIGNING FOR COMMERCIAL SPACE
Designing for commercial space is arguably the most difficult
form of interior design due to the extensive diversity of
personality types that exist amongst team members working
for organisations. Designers will therefore display a natural
ability to communicate with many different types of people in
order to understand their individual needs. As well as dealing
with members of staff, building contractors and situations
involving change management, an interior designer’s ultimate
goal is to create workspaces that maintain the company
corporate culture and enhance the learning, motivation and
wellbeing of all employees.
ROLE OF THE DESIGNER IN COMMERCIAL WORKSPACES

Intelligent workspace that fits to the client's original timeframe,

business objectives and budget.
They will have studied topics like colour psychology, acoustics in
the workplace and common issues that arise in the workplace,
often relating to poor communication, low levels of engagement
and reduced motivation as a result of the poor quality of the
space they operate in.
The designer will assess the different personalities that exist
amongst the team working for the organisation, the spatial
capacity of the office as well as the company culture, in order to
come up with a design solution that is safe, is functional, is
aesthetically pleasing and helps to improve quality of life.

By conducting a workplace consultation, this helps the interior

designer to identify a balance between the different personality
types within the organisation and the level of achievable increase
in productivity levels, as well as helping to significantly reduce
real estate occupancy savings based on the space available.
Calming colours vs excitable colours
People who don’t work well under
pressure may prefer to work in a
space of calm and sedateness which
is often associated with the colour
blue. People who thrive in fast paced
work environments and are
motivated by challenges may react
positively to the colour red.
Office partitions ensure employee and information security. They also offer a quick and easy way to customize workspaces and meet the
expansion needs of business. Office partition panels come in different types, from glass partitions to the portable ones. A business should
choose partition panels based on design and space requirements. To guide you further, we list common types of office partitions that are
currently available in the industry.

1. FLOOR-TO-CEILING PARTITIONS
Also known as full-height partitions, floor to ceiling partitions are a popular solution to break workspaces. They do not fully enclose the seating
area or impede visibility in the office. Metal is the common material used to manufacture floor-to-ceiling partitions and the frame is covered with
cloth. You can easily reconfigure and move these partitions from place to place.
2. GLASS PARTITIONS
Glass partitions usually come in half and full-height panels. They are popular owing to their simplicity and ability to give spaces a stylish makeover.
Most of the partitions are made of glass and aluminum. The main advantage of glass partitions is that they reduce noise and allow light in all
areas of the workspaces.
3. CUBICLES
The most common and basic partitions, cubicles are also called “half height” partitions and offer some privacy to employees. They are easy to
move from one place to another and feature four walls and an opening for people to enter and exit. The fourth wall of a cubicle is half the height
of remaining three walls and there’s a workspace with a work desk and computer space.
4. PORTABLE OFFICE PARTITIONS
Portable office partitions often have rollers attached at the bottom so that they can be easily moved from one place to the other. Businesses
looking for a flexible, temporary partition solutions can opt for portable office partitions. Even though they offer minimal privacy, some of them
come with enhanced noise reduction feature.
5. ACCORDION WALLS
More or less similar to portable partitions, accordion walls provide full enclosure in much the same way as floor-to-ceiling partitions. They are
easy to move and install in different ways. You can fold the panels out or even close them in to arrange them in a variety of setups.
A partition wall of drywall
Drywall or Gyproc is the most commonly used material for partitions. Such a wall is
particularly lightweight, so you can place it on any surface without a problem. The
construction is simple. The drywall is screwed on two sides on a frame of wooden or
metal slats. Between the plasterboards you can apply insulation material . After you
have sealed the joints with a filler, you can finish the wall as desired with tiles, plaster or
wallpaper.
Special wet-resistant drywall is available for wet areas.
Wood instead of drywall
Proceeding in the same way, you can also use plywood, chipboard or MDF
(Medium Density Fiberboard) instead of plasterboard
A partition wall of aerated concrete blocks

Aerated concrete blocks are large, lightweight building blocks with which you
can quickly build a partition wall. They are available in different sizes, with a
thickness of 5 to 10 cm, a width of 60 cm and a height of 20 or 40 cm. There
are even quarter-round aerated concrete blocks for sale, with which you can
make a round wall.
Aerated concrete blocks are glued together. Cutting to size is best done with a
special aerated concrete blocks saw, which is equipped with extra hardened
teeth.
A wall of aerated concrete blocks is moisture-resistant, heat-insulating and fire-
resistant. Because you can tile it well, it is ideal for damp rooms in the house.

A partition wall of glass building blocks

A glass partition wall is decorative and ensures that no light is lost.
Glass building blocks are available in various shades, and in both a
matte and clear version. You need 25 bricks for a square meter.
You can construct such a decorative glass wall in two ways:
bricklaying with special masonry mortar for glass building blocks, or
with a so-called rapid building system, which consists of plastic
profiles that you finish with silicone sealant.
An office of given area must be detailed with interiors of working area, partition walls, false
ceiling flooring with the prescribed materials for the module.

Design and deliberate the interiors of the office with suitable details and sketches.
