Varun beverages is a franchisee of PepsiCo. All of them are licensed drinks of PepsiCo the multinational food and beverages company. Varun currently has seven production lines that are producing a total of 58 million bottles and cans in a month . Water pre treatment The main aim for water treatment is to eliminate and to reduce contamination or non desirable characteristics of water . The objective of this process is to obtain water with the right features for the use intended for it . At Varun beverages water is stored in 500L tanks and treated using ferric chloride hypochlorite. Water is supplied by Harare City Council and is stored in two 4 million litre tanks which are receiver tanks. After that water is then transported to smaller tanks for treatment using chlorine and ferric chloride and then pumped to sand filtration tanks. Water is then transported to tanks with activated carbon which helps remove certain chemical particularly organic chemicals from water. GAC is also used to remove chemicals that give objectionable odors to tastes to water such as hydrogen and sulphide. It is further softened using calcium and magnesium and then taken to reverse osmosis for further treatment and then stored. Reverse osmosis is the reversal of natural flow of osmosis and in this process water is forced through the membrane in the opposite direction by application of pressure. Ozonation Ozonation is used in the beverage industry to remove residue and micro organisms. It is a superior agent for disinfection and removal of micro organisms in these applications. One benefit is equipment disassembly is not required and disinfection is highly effective with ozone. At Varun ozone is used to sterilize bottles . Beverage making SYRUP PREPARATION Ingredients for syrup production are water, sugar carbon, filter paper and concentrate. Syrup tank is filled with water which is heated up to clean and sanitize the tank. Syrup is prepared from filter water, sugar and the concentration of the room is well equipped with several tanks and filter press water under pressure. Carbonated syrup fills the filler machine. From this machine syrup is poured into calculated amount of syrup along with concentrate and water and a saturated solution is being prepared and sent through a machine called Filter Press syrup is filtered here. The filtered syrup is passed through a para flow cooler when by recycling and glycol method the temperature of the cooled down to 20 to 25 degrees cooled syrup is the stored in syrup tanks .Syrup is mixed with carbonated bottles in calculated amount. The crowner machine helps in closing the bottle mouth with helps of the caps completely air tight.Ready bottles are sent through an inspection centre for examination. Carbonated Drinks Carbonated water has 94% soft drink and it adds a special sparkle and bites to the average and acts as a mid preservative .Carbon dioxide is a suitable gas for preservative and is the second main ingredient which is sugar and it adds sweetness and body to beverage .Sugar also balances flavours and acids .The most common acid in soft drinks iscitric acid.
Quality control parameters
At Varun Beverages light inspection is used to detect defaults .The quality control team have a variety of inspection standards to assess their ingredients and identify any safety issues before production starts . They should also ensure that their raw materials are safe to use . Ensuring safe and effective packaging by making sure that the product remains safe by putting the packaging through its paces .Final observations for taste , colour and scent are the last step to ensure a high quality product. Accurate sugar concentration is an important parameter for consistent quality of soft drink. Varun beverages has international standard that specifies requirements for quality management system. Effluent treatment At Varun beverages water is one of the most significant since water is the main ingredient of their products . The storage tank stored raw effluent from different parts of the factory .From the storage tank raw effluent is passed to the equalization tank with the help of a pump. The function of equalization tank is to equalize raw effluent from different processing units . A neutralization tank neutralises raw material acidic in nature by adding saturated solution of NaOH. A primary clarifier removes suspended heavy particles from raw effluent and in this tank heavy particles along with sludge which bacteria have degraded settles down at the bottom of the tank . Effluent from the anaerobic hybrid reactor is received in the aeration stage by pumping.
