MEEPP 205-3 COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN POWER SYSTEMS (Elective III)

1(a)Explain the formation of network matrices by nonsingular transformations. (10 marks)

1(b)Two cylindrical rotor generators and a synchronous condenser feed a two transmission line net
work. Each component of the net work is expressed in per unit on its own power and voltage rating
Draw the positive and zero sequence diagram using π equivalent transmission lines. Show numerical
values of the components in the diagram. Determine the Zbus.

Generator G1: 50 MVA, 13.8 k.V.,X1’= X2’=j0.3,X0= j0.1,Xg= j0.1

Generator G2:100 MVA, 20 k.V.,X1’= X2’=j0.8,X0= j0.2, Xg= j0.1

Condenser SC: 20 MVA, 13.8 k.V.,X 1’= X2’=j0.2,X0= j0.1,

Transformer T1: 50 MVA, 13.8:138 k.V., Z= 0.033+j 0.20

Transformer T2: 100 MVA, 20:138 k.V., Z= j 0.20

Transformer T3: 20 MVA, 13.8:138 k.V., Z=j 0.20

2(a)Describe the building algorithm of bus impedance matrix. Give a numerical example.

2(b)Designate Bus 6 as the reference in the network shown. Define a tree with transmission lines 1-6
and 2-5 as links..Use the Z bus building algorithm to obtain bus impedance matrix. The line data are as
follows.

3(a)Formulate the equations and draw the flow chart for G.S. method. 10 marks

3(b). Consider the three bus system. Each of the three lines has a series impedance of
0.02+j0.08 P.U. and a total shunt admittance of j0.02 P.U. The specified quantities at the
buses are tabulated below.

4(b) Write short notes on (i)Unified solution for AC/DC load flow, (ii) D.C. System modeling, (iii)
Three phase AC/DC load flow. 15 marks
5(a)Derive the equation for fault current and line voltages in an LL fault.
5(b)Machines 1 and 2 are rated 100 MVA,13.2 k.V.,X 1=X2 = 20%,X0= 4%, Xn =5%, Transformers
are 100 MVA 13.2/345 k.V., X=8% and line on appropriate base X 1=X2=15%,Xo=50%.Find the
fault current for (i)L.G. fault and (ii) L.L.G. fault in bus 3.

6(a)Explain short circuit studies using Z bus.
6(b) Two 11k.V., 20 MVA star connected generators operate in parallel. The positive, negative
and zero sequence reactances of each being, j0.18,j0.15,j0.1 p.u. The star point of one of the
generators is isolated. The neutral of the other is grounded through a resistor of 2 ohms.
Estimate the fault current and current in the grounding resistor when an (i)L.G. fault (ii) LLG
fault occurs in the terminals of one of the generators.
7(a) Describe Brown’s method for contingency analysis. 10 marks
7(b) What are network sensitivity factors? How are they calculated? 15 marks

8(a)Discuss the feasibility of multi phase systems. 10 marks
8(b)Explain the mathematical modeling of a 3 phase star/ six phase star transformer. 15 marks
