Iec 322

IEC 322 provides testing methods for insulated wires and cables under fire conditions. IEC 322-1 specifies testing a single wire by applying a gas flame continuously based on the wire's diameter, and ensuring charring does not exceed 50mm within two additional passing tests. IEC 322-2 specifies an alternative method for small wires, applying a propane flame for up to 20 seconds and ensuring charring does not reach within 50mm of the wire's top after burning ceases. IEC 322-3 involves testing cable samples in a vertical chamber by exposing them to a propane burner and ensuring charring does not exceed 2.5m above the burner.

IEC 322

IEC 322-1
This part of IEC 332 specifies a method to test on a single vertical insulated wire or cable
under the conditions and the requirements for compliance. The test sample is a piece of the
finished wire or cable (600±25) mm long. The ignition source is a gas burner complying
with IEC 695-2-4/1. The flame shall be applied continuously for the period of time
corresponding to the diameter shown in the table.
The wire or cable shall pass the test in the distance between the lower edge on the top
support and the onset of

charring is greater than 50 mm. In addition, a failure shall be recorded if burning extends
downwards to appoint greater

than 540 mm from the lower edge of the top support. If the failure is recorded two more
tests shall be carried out. If both

test results in passes, the wire or cable shall be deemed to have passed the test.

IEC 322-2.

This part of IEC 332 specifies a method of testing a small insulated wire under the fire
conditions when the method specified in IEC 332-1 is not suitable because some small
conductors may melt during the application of the flame. The This part of IEC 332 specifies
a method of testing a small insulated wire under the fire conditions when the method range
of application recommended is for solid copper conductors from 0,4 mm to 0,8 mm
diameter and for stranded conductors from 0,1 mm2 to 0,5 mm2 The test sample is a piece
of the finished wire or cable (600±25) mm long.
 The ignition source is a gas burner fed with propane.
 The gas flow is adjusted so that the total length of the luminous flame is (125±25) mm.
 The flame is applied to sample for a maximum duration of (20±1) s. Should the conductor prematurely
melt, at a time T
 less that (20±1) s, the test shell be repeated on a new sample for a duration of (Т-2) s.
 After all burning has ceased, the surface of the sample shall be wiped clean and the charred portion shall
not have reached within 50 mm of the lower edge of the top clamp.

IEC 322-3

 The test sample is comprise a number a test pieces of cable from the same length, each having a minimum
length of 3,5 m.
 The test rig comprise a vertical test chamber, in which is mounting steal ladder for fixing of samples and ignition
source – ribbon type propane gas burner.
 After burning the maximum extend of the charred portion of test sample should not have reached a height
exceeding 2,5 m above the bottom edge of the burner, neither at the front nor the rear of the ladder.
